Parents Attempt To Take Over High Desert Elementary School

ADELANTO (CBS) — The Adelanto Elementary School District board held an emergency meeting Wednesday to stop parents from taking over Desert Trails Elementary.

Parents guided by Parent Revolution, a non-profit group based in Los Angeles, exercised their "parent trigger rights." They're demanding sweeping changes and want the Adelanto school to be turned into a charter school.

Earlier this week, a court ruling allowed the parents to help run the facility through state guidelines.

However, the school board opposes the idea.

Principal David Mobley was brought in last October. Parents said he's not the problem, but they have a problem with the underperforming school.

"I'm here to do whatever I can to give these kids the best education I can," Mobley said.

Parent Doreen Diaz said they don't want to leave the school the way it was, but time is running out. School starts in less than four weeks.

"We won't be able to run the school completely by August 20," said Diaz.

Parents said the more reasonable goal is to be in charge of the school by next year.
