LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The brutal beating of a man on the side of a Los Angeles-area freeway is going viral.

The video captured on a smartphone was reportedly taken on June 12 along Interstate 5 outside of downtown Los Angeles. It was uploaded by user "ghostsofmany" to LiveLeak Monday with nearly 100,000 views so far.

A bystander shot the 2-minute video after coming upon an argument between three motorists in an older-model Volkswagen and a black motorist driving a Honda.

The video initially shows the two men taunting each other and exchanging expletives before engaging in a fist fight.

A third suspect wearing a black t-shirt, who was one of the passengers in the Volkswagen, is later seen joining in and helping to throw the victim to the ground.

The three men are seen scuffling on the ground until the two men from the Volkswagen kicked the victim - who was wearing a purple shirt -- six times in the head before returning to their vehicle.

The suspects are heard saying, "Let's go!" before fleeing the scene in a Volkswagen with California License plate number 3UGW962.

It was unclear what the fight was about.

It is unclear if authorities are conducting an investigation into the beating. Anyone with information should contact the California Highway Patrol.
