LOS ANGELES (CBS) — California prison inmates who are held in solitary confinement are petitioning the United Nations to step in and end the practice.

KNX 1070′s John Brooks reports that advocates submitted the petition on behalf of 400 of the more than 4,000 prisoners in isolation at a news conference in Los Angeles Tuesday.

“California is not Guantanamo, California is not operating in Medieval Times, said Peter Schey, President of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law. “This is not a gulag.”

Those who attended the conference are unhappy with state prison officials’ recently proposed change to make it easier for inmates to get out of solitary confinement.

Among those who are unhappy was the mother of a 14-month-long prisoner in isolation at Pelican Bay.

“What would you do if it was your husband, or your brother?” said Dalores Conales. “How would you feel? Would you not be crying out?”

sounds like the best way to stay out solitary confinement is don’t commit crimes that put you there.

    1. Greg says:

Your comment is far too logical, rational, and makes way too much sense.

      1. Frank says:

Sounds like you have been in prison.

There’s alot of innocent ppl. in there …Yes it’s true…..and it’s hard when they have to not be a rat and take the bull that come’s their way.

    1. jmz says:

“innocent” according to whom? Them? and if they chose to take the bull then thats there problem no ours. Hell prisioners live better than i do and i work hard. face it, barring a FEW cases, EVERYONE in prision DESERVES to be there. they commited a crime and then commited more crime in prisions to get solitare. all these libs crying about how their prro criminals ‘suffer’ dont care a lick about the victimes their pets harmed. they complain about the dark of a cell and care nothing about the victim who in many cases see the dark of a grave. as far as im concerned each prisioner should be shacked to a wall for their duration of their sentence. that would eliminate many repeat offenders as well as all the crimes committed by prisioners inside the jail as well as the major cartel leaders diricting outside crimes from inside the jail. they dont like to then dont commit the crime. they want to go to prision rather than not ‘be a rat’ then it sucks to be them i have no sympathy

  4. Greg says:

No doubt Holder will also think this is a good idea, or that it’s racist or something. Solitary confinement is there for a reason. If you don’t want to be in solitary, don’t do something that will put you there. Period.

Pretty soon people will be saying it’s not fair to put criminals in jail.

  5. Jerry says:

According to the prison population they are all innocent.

  6. Tired says:

I say bring back public crucifixions. Maybe that would convince some of the brain stems that live here to clean up their clueless acts.

  7. FFL says:

If you can’t do the time DON’T do the CRIME! Simple as that!

  8. john says:

that’s right: turn loose all the mfs; in the neighborhood where these idiots live

  9. Samantha says:

Did they show the UN the video of the graphic crimes they committed, or their behavior in prison that lead to solitary? If they should see the sad crying face of that man, they should see his other faces too, it is only fair.

Let the people that make these laws visit a prison as a ‘new guard’ for a day and see how much sympathy they have for the poor ‘innocent’ guy crying on the video that is wiping feces all over the wall and trying to throw a cup of urine at you anytime you give him a ‘free meal’….

  10. CALIFORNIA = 70% MEXICANS says:

They’re just adding insult to their victims’ families..

Some of their victims are never the same or never coming home & these inmates are asking for some slack??

A lot of bitter and hateful people in California. It certainly is easy to see that you have been victimized by “offenders”.

    1. jmz says:

Darla: why are we ” bitter and hateful people” because we want criminals punished? these people rob, kill, rape, and more and you think we are bitter because we want to not reward them? how easy should we make their lives Darla? please answer me. Lets see prisioners already get food, clothing and shelter. They get better meals than alot of homeless peope and even thoes with homes, they get free medical care, excercise equipment where they can get ripped, free libraries, access to computers, telephones, internet and yes even face book, free drugs, free education and even college degrees. Snacks, money, congicle visits, and even the ability to commit more crimes while in prision or direct others outside to do the crimes for themFor the right crime they can even get book and movie deals where denzel washington will play them and get liberals to feel sorry for them and write songs about their plight. The victims of these poor criminals crimes get…well, they get lost property, time money , a dead mother father, sister, brother, wife, husband, child and the ‘pride’ in knowing celebs and idiot spineless liberals and celebs worship a person who committed horible crimes against innocents, just for media attention and power and to seem ‘tolerant and forgiving’. So in conclusion i SALUTE all the ‘bitter and hateful’ people who demand that criminals be punished rather than pittied and I hope that the brainless liberals who pitty these worthless human trash prisioners get to finally be real victims of the same people they hold in high esteem. this way they they do noth have to pretend to be victims and then they can ‘forgive and tolerate’ all they want.

What ever happened to loving your neighbor as yourself? Whatever happened to Father, give us our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive those who are in debt to us….In Hebrew, the word for give bread is just one letter different than forgive. They are very, very, very closely related. Whatever happened to: He that is without sin cast the first stone? Prison and jail–incarceration, and certainly solitary confinement are not biblical. Some of you would advocate following the precepts in the Bible. But, do you walk the walk?

Matthew 25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

25:44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Our master, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

    And Isaiah 61:1-3 says:
    61:1 The Spirit of the Master YHWH is upon me; because YHWH hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

    61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of YHWH, and the day of vengeance of our Elohim; to comfort all that mourn;

61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of YHWH, that he might be glorified.
