Long Beach's Colorado Lagoon Closed For Clean-Up Through July

LONG BEACH (CBS) — The Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach was closed Thursday for clean up after several hazardous compounds were found in the water.

Tests found lead, zinc and a compound called chloradane in the water as workers have begun removing approximetly 20,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment. The tidal lagoon is also polluted by a high bacteria levels.

The clean-up will cost $3.6 million and is part of a project that will restore the lagoon's ecosystem and improve water quality, officials said.

Officials say the lagoon is one of California's most polluted bodies of water.

The city of Long Beach's public works department plans to keep the Colorado Lagoon closed until the end of July.
