Southern California Cleans-Up After Santa Ana Winds, Thousands Without Power

TEMPLE CITY (CBS) — Thousands of Southland residents are without power Friday after winds continued to wreak havoc overnight.

States of emergency have been declared in Glendora, Monrovia, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre and Temple City due to the wind.

The winds knocked down 21 power polls on Live Oak Avenue in Irwindale and nine crews worked overnight to clear the area. Power is not expected to be restored for seven days in one commercial area.

Business owners say they could lose as much as $10,000 a day due to the power outage.

"Everything's down in the street here. It's just going to take a lot of time and a lot of manpower to get it all cleaned up and put back up," said foreman Rick Hunter.

In Temple City, 175 trees fell on homes and blocked 30 streets. According to Mayor Tom Chavez, 36 power polls snapped leaving 75 percent of the city without power until Sunday at the earliest.

Temple City residents have been asked to boil water before drinking or using for cooking. City facilities will also be closed until Monday.

Meanwhile in Pasadena, 100 percent of the city's main streets are open and half of the secondary streets are clear enough for use after crews worked overnight to clean-up fallen trees.

"We're just trying to open up the roads for the people to get back-and-forth to work and just move around the city. . . . We're working 24 hours around the clock," a Pasadena city employee told CBS2's Kara Finnstrom.

Officials say it will take several weeks until all trees are disposed of.

More than 40 houses and building in the city have been deemed uninhabitable. Just under 1,000 Pasadena Water and Power customers remain without electricity Friday morning, officials said.

The wind damage and power outages have forced several school districts to cancel classes Friday.

District closures include:

• Alhambra Unified School District
• Arcadia Unified School District
• Azusa Unified School District
• Baldwin Park Unified School District
• Duarte Unified School District
• Monrovia Unified School District
• Pasadena Unified School District
• San Gabriel Unified School District
• South Pasadena Unified School District
• Temple City Unified School District

Additional School Closures:

• Crestview Preparatory School (La Canada)
• Odyssey Charter School (Altadena)
• Westridge School For Girls (Pasadena)
• San Gabriel Christian (San Gabriel)

Some businesses have benefited from the massive power outage and wind damage.

Two Orchard Supply Hardware stores in the Pasadena-area have been open for 24-hours. Store officials say there has been a high demand for generators, ice, flashlights, batteries, trash cans and chainsaws.
