SAN BERNARDINO (CBS) — A missing hiker has been found after he was spotted by a helicopter search crew Friday.

About two dozen deputies in San Bernardino County were looking Friday for Bryan Gutierrez, 30, of Chino, who was reported missing late Thursday night.

Officials say Gutierrez was hiking in Forest Falls Thursday with a group of hikers who were attempting the 8,000 Meter Challenge to climb the three tallest peaks in Southern California within a 24-hour period.

The group had successfully climbed the first two peaks, but on the way down from San Gorgonio, Gutierrez got lost.

“I missed the turn and went way too far,” he said.

Gutierrez spent the night in a hollowed-out log.

“It was scary. It was cold,” he added.

The Chino man was found in relatively good condition Friday around 2 p.m.

hope he’s ok, but you can’t wander off by yourself + no one should hike in this heat and in San Bern. it’s even hotter.

  2. 'Se says:

the experienced hiker a missing Chino man. Hhhhmmm I guess he’s not so experienced if he’s missing. Must be a Boy Scout Trooper they seem to always wonder around and end up getting lost.

A windbreake/rain coatr and a mylar blanket($1 each at dollar stores) weighs less than a pint of water. A prepaid cell phone costs ten bucks + prepaid minutes. What is peace of mind worth. A USGS trail map if free on the internet. May be experienced, but not prepared. Hope he is located and spreads the lesson to his hundred or so friends. In that large of a group they shouldd use the buddy system, like kids do on family outings.

  4. cmt says:

‘Se; why don’t you shut up! If it was someone you knew and loved you wouldn’t be saying that right now. you would just be glad that he’s okay. piece of s@#!

  5. Deborah Lynn Andelin says:

Who will be picking up the expense for the search party. Hopefully not the Taxpayers.

  6. cmt says:

Deborah Lynn Andelin, another piece of s@#!. What if it was your husband that was missing, or your son or brother? Is that all you can think of to say in response to a man missing? Wow. Let me guess, you’re a republican too.

    1. Karen says:

I agree with Deborah. We did not partake in activities that cost the city or county money. So why should our tax dollars pay for all these rescues? I think we should expend the resources to find people and charge those who used the services for the services rendered. I was thinking the same thing when I heard about those kids who are not climbers but decided to climb a cliff and had to be airlifted out of there. I wonder how much that cost us? And I am not a Republican. I’m an independent.

  7. ??? says:

it’s ridiculous to hike in the heat this week

  8. Deborah Lynn Andelin says:

What a lovely individual you are CMT swearing at people who have opinions that differ from you. As a taxpayer I am concerned about the state and our country finances. Excuse me for expecting ADULTS to be responsible individuals who respect hiking in areas that they are unfamiliar with and that they should be diligent in trying to stay as a group. I don’t appreciate paying for other people errors. But CMT you are free to waste you personal monies helping those who are ignorant.

  9. cmt says:

It’s not your opinion that bothers me, it’s your cold heart. We are all taxpayers Deborah Lynn Andelin, don’t get it twisted. Accidents happen, have you ever heard of that one? A big difference between an error and an accident. Looks like you’re the ignorant one. Even the most skilled hikers have accidents. I guess money is more important than a human life. Like I said, coldhearted. You are, of course, a lovely individual yourself.

    1. Karen says:

Deborah did not have a cold heart.

      You are simply rude CMT.

Money does not grow on trees and since you feel so inclined to contribute CMT, why don’t you write the check for the $2000 they expended on a helicopter?

  10. Deborah Lynn Andelin says:

Here is the definition of ERROR quoted from Webster “an act or condition of ignorant or imprudent deviation from a code of behavior”. That would mean…. wait…. wait…. “suggests the existence of a standard or guide and a straying from the right course”. Now who doesn’t know what they are talking about? Look it up, Webster is in your search engine. As you say, I am a lovely individual. So you must be a genius. Perhaps in the future, you can learn the meaning of ALL the words in English Language. Just a goal.

  11. cmt says:

Right, because everyone knows ALL the words in the english language, including you. I can’t believe you actually had to search for the definition of error just to try to make a point. Hahaha. Laughable. Just proves my point about who/what I’m wasting my time with. You’re a joke. I don’t have time for your level of ignorance. It’s indefatigable. Now you can go look that one up. Jerk.

  12. Matt SF says:

How did he get separated from the group? Or did they leave him there?

    Cheap LA Storage

  13. Deborah Lynn Andelin says:

Have you noticed, CMT, YOU are the person who is name calling…. Jerk…. Democrat… Cold hearted… etc. Telling others who have opinions that differ from you to “shut up” and “Swearing”. While I haven’t engaged you with such immature behavior but with FACTS. Yes, I looked up the definition since you couldn’t or wouldn’t and didn’t understand that the word “Error” has many different meanings and I knew unless it came from an Educated source such as Webster, you wouldn’t believe me. You behave like you are ALL KNOWING and you are not, despite your pompous behavior. I will consider the source and your outrageous behavior. I too am through engaging you. Thank you for the verbal exchange.

  14. Pat Robertson says:

Happy endings are boring. Someone shoot him in the face.

  15. friend of a friend says:

We pay for rescuers whether or not they have work to do. You make too much of the cost which is already being expended whether they are just sitting around the fire station or out doing their what they’re paid to do. I for one am glad he was found safe and grateful for the skilled search party that found him.

    1. Karen says:

Maybe we should reduce the number of rescuers we pay if they are sitting around with nothing to do.

I frankly do not believe you and if it is true, we need to cut some of these people if they sit around waiting to rescue people all day.

      1. cmt says:

Another one. You don’t get it. You can not believe it all you want, it’s still the truth. It’s the nature of the position, just like with firefighters. They’re not sitting around doing nothing all day, they are on call, training, and ready for when these kinds of things happen. You are worried about the economy and yet you want people fired. Wow.

      2. Karen says:

CMT – at least you stopped swearing. Who said fire anyone? It’s called workforce reduction, especially when the worker is not producing.

You’re not a boss. Bosses think about costs.

If we have people sitting around and not producing, we should not be paying them for 40 hours and then let them retire at age 50 and 90% of their salary.

Otherwise, we taxpayers are the stupid idiots. Oh I forgot, most of you voted for Moonbeam who doesn’t care if we pay these kinds of pensions.

  16. Jack says:

I want more Cmt & Deborah comments!

    1. BD McGee says:

how about a topless pillow fight instead?

  17. lydia says:

it’s sad to read certain comments. bryan is a friend of mine and he IS an experienced hiker.
we all prayed for him and are thankful he was found. as for me, i was geared up ready to go in the terrain myself, but when i arrived, thankfully he was rescued.
please wonder in your hearts if you would call this “wasted money” if it where your child, your husband, your loved one that was taking a wrong turn at a hike… we are all humans and we all make mistakes.
i hope no-one chooses money over life.
anyone who knows bryan knows he’s a man that gives more than he takes. good to see that he was helped for once. we are lucky to have people like him around us.

    1. BD McGee says:

      your friend is a nimrod.

  18. Sandra says:

Lydia I too know Brian he is family and I agree with you he is a very giving person who cares very deaply about others. I am so glad that he was found. It’s sad to see that people are so wrapped up in themselves that they can not care about others needs. But no matter what others say we know the truth and that is what keeps us strong in our faith.

  19. Mink says:

To argue with people is a waste of time… I live here and bad things like this happen to good, bad, skilled, and unskilled people all the time, But a lot of them are found dead. I’m happy he made it. Staying in the woods overnight, not being prepared is a b*tch. It was not too hot here for hiking and most cell phone do not work on that trail. Lydia and Sandra… Don’t let these people steal the families joy of not loosing a love one. I would rather my tax money go toward finding him, over the other BS we pay for on a day to day bases. .
