Phony Investigator Trying To Get Personal Information From LA-Area Doctors

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A warning was issued Friday that several Los Angeles-area physicians have been contacted by a phony investigator asking for personal information and threatening cancellation of their license to practice medicine.

The purported investigator asks physicians for their Social Security and credit card numbers, according to the Medical Board of California.

"This individual is not associated with the Medical Board of California," the board said in a statement. "Please take the necessary precautions to ensure your Social Security and credit information is not misused."

Doctors who are contacted by someone claiming to be a Medical Board investigator who requests credit card and Social Security information should call local law enforcement authorities or contact the medical board.
