Evacuations Lifted After Crews Stop Gas Leak In North Hollywood

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBS)
— Crews have stopped a leak in a gas line, which a contractor ruptured during a re-paving project in North Hollywood Monday. Evacuations were lifted for several nearby businesses.

Firefighters were sent to the 6800 block of North Coldwater Canyon Avenue shortly after 10 a.m., according Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Authorities said traffic was routed away from the area. No injuries were reported.

A few nearby homes and businesses were evacuated as a precaution, and students at a nearby elementary school were advised to stay inside.

"None of them are in any danger," LAFD Capt. Jaime Moore told CBS2.

Anne Silva of the Southern California Gas Co. said the contractor's crew damaged the 3-inch steel natural gas line, a valve and the steel casing housing the line.

Silva urged people to call the 811 line, which provides a free service to mark underground utility lines for anyone planning to conduct excavation projects.
