Murder Trial Of Former LA Fire Captain Begins

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A prosecutor says a former Los Angeles fire captain brutally beat a woman, strangled her for no apparent reason in his living room and then dumped her nude and bloodied body on a street in his neighborhood.

Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace said in his opening statement Wednesday that 54-year-old David Del Toro tried to cover up the crime but left a path of DNA evidence that led from his house to where 42-year-old Jennifer Flores was found about a mile away in August 2006.

Del Toro has been charged with one count of murder and faces 25 years to life in state prison if convicted. He retired from the Los Angeles Fire Department, where he had worked for 23 years, following his arrest.
