No Tsunami Threat Predicted Despite 7.1 Quake In Chile

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — No tsunami threat was predicted in California Sunday despite a magnitude-7.1 quake that rattled southern Chile.

The quake, which was centered in the Araucania region, 370 miles southwest of the capital, Santiago, struck at 12:20 p.m. Los Angeles time, the USGS reported.

The West Coast Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska said the quake would not generate any warning, watch or advisory in the U.S. A similar forecast came from the Pacific Warning Center in Hawaii.

Last February, a magnitude-8.8 quake hit the same general area, killing about 1,500 people and leveling many cities. In California, it generated unusual ocean flows that damaged docks in some coastal marinas, as well as a tsunami advisory.
