Wilshire Bus Line Likely Closer Than 'Subway To The Sea'

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The long-delayed "subway to the sea" may be pre-empted by a bus line extension.

The city may be close to approving a nine-mile long bus way on top of Wilshire Boulevard from MacArthur park stretching almost all the way to Santa Monica at a cost of roughly $32 million.

KNX 1070's John Brooks reports

Officials say the line could encourage more people to get out of their cars while cutting down the number of rush hour traffic lanes for cars.

Wilshire Boulevard has 80,000 bus boardings per week, along with an average of 80,000 vehicles passing through each day.

If approved, the bus lanes could be completed by the summer of 2012, while the proposed multi-billion dollar subway isn't project to be finished until at least 2036.
