Surf Beach Reopens After Deadly Shark Attack

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE (AP) — Authorities have reopened a Central California beach where a shark attack killed a 19-year-old college student last week.

Vandenberg Air Force Base reopened its Surf Beach on Monday morning.

No sharks were spotted over the weekend but officials will post warning signs noting the recent attack and advising beachgoers that they swim and surf at their own risk.

Lucas Ransom, a student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, died Friday when a shark nearly severed his leg as he body-boarded at Surf Beach.

Two beaches open only to Vandenberg personnel, Wall and Minuteman, will remain closed -- but not because of sharks. The base is undergoing a two-week inspection and has canceled outdoor recreation.
