Caltech Proclaimed 2nd Best University In The World

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — We want a recount! Harvard edged out Pasadena's Caltech by just .1 to be named the best university in the world, according to a study published by an international education magazine in Britain.

The London-based Times Higher Education proclaimed Caltech No. 2 by just .1 on a 1-to-100 scale. Harvard scored 96.1 and Caltech got an even 96.

Harvard and UCLA also placed 1-2 in rankings for the United States.

In Los Angeles, UCLA far outdistanced USC. UCLA's 87.7 points made it the 11th best university in the world and the 8th best in the United States. USC was rated No. 73 in the world and 48 in the U.S.

Several other Southern California universities also made the rankings. UC San Diego was placed at 32 in the world and 24 in the nation, UC Irvine at 49 in the world and 30 in the nation, and UC Riverside came in at 117th in the world and 63rd in the country.

The World University Ranking list rated schools in five categories: the influence of its research, the quality of the teaching, the volume of its research, the diversity of its staff and students and how well it passes on its wealth of knowledge. Each category was scored between 1-100.

UC Riverside spokeswoman Bettye Miller says educators consider this list of the most important of such reports.
