Brawl Breaks Out At Pitchess Detention Center
CASTAIC, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say up to 600 men were involved in a disturbance at a Los Angeles County jail that sent two inmates to the hospital.
Sheriff's captain Michael Parker says one group of inmates attacked another group in what appeared to be a coordinated effort Sunday afternoon at Pitchess detention center in Castaic 50 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
Parker says the sheriff's department, which operates the jail, called in help from Santa Clarita deputies and CHP officers and quickly regained control of the jail.
No staffers were injured and no inmates escaped.
It was not immediately clear what caused the attack.
Parker says there were several other minor injuries, most from inmates trying to break their own windows in an effort to make shanks for the fight.
