LOS ANGELES (AP) – Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriffs deputy shot and wounded a carjacking suspect who allegedly stabbed the vehicle’s driver.

Deputy Lillian Peck says the shooting happened late Saturday in the Willowbrook area as deputies were trying to detain the suspect.

Peck says the man refused to remove his hands from inside a duffle bag. A deputy opened fire when the suspect raised the bag and pointed it as if there was a gun inside.

The suspect was hospitalized in stable condition.

The condition of the stabbing victim is unknown.

Peck says the instrument used in the stabbing was recovered at the scene.
