Known as a top political commentator, Peggy Noonan gathered her premier writings and included them in her book "The Time of Our Lives: Collected Writings," and in addition to providing a free lecture, she is also doing a book signing. Her elaborate, hand-made pieces are all designed by her and take about 400 craftsmen to produce. She trains all of the craftsmen and oversees each project until completion. If you are looking for inspiration, check out the lecture featuring Travis Mills, who suffered quadruple amputee injuries from the war in Afghanistan and is the author of "As Tough As They Come." Miraculously, Mills is recovering from the injuries with "amazing strength, courage, an incredible will to live, the heroic actions of the men in his unit, the prayers of thousands and all the healthcare providers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, near Washington D.C." Red is a color that grabs your attention. Often associated with "blood, fire, fertility and life force," Pre-Columbian Art History and Archaeology Professor Elena Phipps will examine the history of the treasured color among several cultures, as well as highlight how challenging it was to develop the shade. She will also elaborate on how the cochineal insect became the most significant resource for deriving red hues for textiles, hangings, tapestries and paintings by legendary artists VanGogh and Rembrandt. Arguably one of the most iconic United States Presidents in history, Abraham Lincoln is a public figure celebrated by many. The Huntington Library will put a spotlight on him at the upcoming lecture "Distinguished Fellow Lecture - Looking at Lincoln" that will be led by English and American Studies Professor and Los Angeles Times Distinguished Fellow Shirley Samuels. The lecture will explore the relationship of his speeches and pictures and will be held in Rothenberg Hall. There's no fee or registration required.
