Nun Dies Of Injuries Sustained In Boyle Heights Hit-And-Run Crash

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 70-year-old nun has died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Boyle Heights.

Sister Raquel Diaz, who was director of religious education at the Church of Assumption, was in the crosswalk at Winter Street and North Evergreen Avenue when she was struck about 5:20 p.m. on Dec. 13.

The car continued south on Evergreen without stopping after his car hit Diaz, who had been a nun for more than 50 years. Paramedics took Diaz to a hospital, where she died at about noon Sunday, coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.

A description of the driver was not released and the suspect vehicle was initially described as a black truck, but is now said to be a white, four-door compact car, possibly a Toyota or Nissan, last seen going south on Evergreen, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A reward of up to $25,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the driver's identification, apprehension and conviction, or "resolution through a civil compromise," police said.

Anyone with information about the crash can call LAPD Central Traffic Division detectives at (213) 833-3713.
