Redlands School District Won't Be Charged Over Teacher Accused Of Having Student's Baby

SAN BERNARDINO (AP) — San Bernardino County prosecutors say a Redlands school district won't face criminal charges for not telling law enforcement of sexual abuse rumors about a teacher who later had a student's baby.

In a release Friday, spokesman Christopher Lee says prosecutors reviewed the case to find out if the schools violated the state's mandated reporter law.

The review found the school's response was prompt after the 17-year-old boy's mom came to Citrus High School July 1 to report the sexual abuse, saying teacher Laura Whitehurst gave birth to her son's child.

Prior to that, the school didn't act on rumors, for lack of credible reports.

The 28-year-old teacher has pleaded guilty to having sex with a minor and faces 29 years in prison if convicted.

Their baby was born in June.
