Coroner's Official: Decomposing Remains Found Near WeHo Are Human

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — Authorities on Sunday confirmed that badly decomposed remains found inside a vehicle near West Hollywood are human.

The gruesome discovery was made inside a black Cadillac Escalade about 10 a.m. Saturday near Willoughby and Genesee avenues in the Melrose District after neighbors complained of a foul odor, according to KNX 1070's Ed Mertz.

"The smell kept getting worse and worse and I thought there was a dead animal inside this house," said Jennifer Bauman, a neighbor.

The vehicle was subsequently towed to the coroner's office where they were able to confirm that the remains were human.

Coroner investigator Dana Bee told Mertz that an autopsy will likely be conducted Monday to determine the gender, cause of death and the name.

"We have the vehicle registration information. We can sometimes assume that the person is associated with the vehicle and that kind of gives us a starting point as far as where to look," Bee said.

Anyone with more information regarding this case is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department.
