This year’s Masters Golf Tournament has just finished up and the weather in SoCal is finally showing us it is indeed spring! Time to book your tee times and discover some of our best local public golf courses. Our favorites are mostly privately owned but open to anyone who wants to play, but there’s a great municipal golf course on the list, too.
Angeles National Golf Club
9401 Foothill Blvd.
Sunland, CA 91040
Located in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest, this 18-hole, par 72 course is the only one designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus in all of LA. Four sets of tees are offered which is a unique accommodation for golfers of all skill levels. The course is known for “fast greens” and beautiful scenery. Their professional practice facility includes an all-grass driving range, chipping/putting greens and a private practice instructional area.
Green fees start at $50 for 9-holes and always include golf cart rental.
Black & Gold Golf Club
1 Black Gold Dr.
Yorba Linda, CA 92886
This popular 18-hole, par 72, Orange County course was designed by Arthur Hills and includes amazing water features culminating with a magnificent waterfall off the 18th green. Regulars will tell you the fairways are narrow and the greens are super fast. Located just 10 miles from Disneyland, Black & Gold Golf Club is one of only two clubs on The Disneyland Resort’s preferred destinations list. The club has The Black & Gold Golf Academy with instruction ranging from junior to advanced levels.
Green fees start at $25 and include golf cart rental.
Trump National Golf Club
1 Ocean Trails Drive
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275
Trump National sits on the edge of the Pacific Ocean on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. It has the distinction of being the world’s only golf course designed by Trump himself. It is 18-holes, par 71 and has five sets of tees, each with an ocean view. The course layout challenges both experienced golfers and novices and your outing might include some mist from one of the three waterfalls. The Academy at Trump National offers a wide variety of game improvement options for juniors on up.
Green fees start at $80 and include golf cart rental.
Oak Quarry Golf Club
7151 Sierra Ave.
Riverside, CA 92509
The Oak Quarry, 18-hole, par 72, course winds its way through the historic Jensen Quarry. The unique, jagged scenery provides golfers with some interesting features, including a number of elevated tees. Anyone who has played here agrees that the greens “have a funny play” to them and that you might want to get some tips on before teeing off. This course also tends to get very hot at certain times of the year, so be forewarned if you are heading inland and weren’t expecting the warmth.
Green fees start at $30 and include golf cart rental.
Pelican Hill Golf Club
22701 Pelican Hill Rd. South
Newport Coast, CA 92657
Pelican Hill actually has two 18-hole golf courses, Pelican Hill-North (par 71) and Pelican Hill-South (par 70). Both courses receive strong praise, however, most recent reports seem to favor the North course. Pelican Hill offers a Forecaddie Program, included with the green fees. It’s like having your own personal course expert on hand to point out the nuances. Considering the fees here are quite pricey, you do seem to get what you pay for. The Golf Academy offers an extensive list of offerings for juniors on up.
Green fee is $250 and includes golf cart rental and forecaddie. There is also a reduced twilight rate; check the site for further information.
Arroyo Seco Golf Course
1055 Lohman Lane
South Pasadena, CA 91030
Looking for a casual course where you can hit some balls, even at night? Arroyo Seco Golf Course might be perfect for you. This 18-hole course hidden in the middle of South Pasadena has something for everyone, even those simply looking for some fun miniature golf. Green fees don’t go beyond $15.50 and $2 for miniature golf.
Rancho Park Golf Course
10460 W. Pico Blvd
Los Angeles, 90064
Rancho Park Golf Course is one of the busiest municipal golf courses in the country, for several reasons – its great layout, challenging course, scenic views and very reasonable green fees ranging from $31 to $39. The weekends are notorious for being busy and slow, but the course does offer twilight and super twilight play on certain days. Tee times can be booked online, but there is a $5, three-day online reservation for players without a City of Los Angeles Player ID card.
De Bell Golf Course
1500 E. Walnut Ave.
Burbank, CA 91501
Need to get away? Peace, quiet and 18 holes is a short drive away at De Bell Golf Course. This picturesque course is nestled in the canyons of Burbank, where play is relaxing yet challenging. Fees range from $36 on weekends for non-residents playing 18 holes to free for junior residents on weekdays.
