Best Places For Philly Cheesesteaks In L.A.

Anyone who has ever had an authentic Philly Cheesesteak from South St. most likely has a clear favorite. And, if they've ever had an authentic roll made by Amoroso's Baking Company, they will also know that Amoroso rolls are synonymous with the perfect classic cheesesteak sandwich. Angelenos don't have to look too hard to find outstanding cheesesteaks right here in L.A. Many of the best places to eat a cheesesteak are owned by natives from the City of Brotherly Love.

Philly West Bar & Grill is a local dive for Philly cheesesteaks. Owned by Allentown, Pennsylvania native Mark Lifland, Philly West calls out the neighborhood vibe of Philadelphia by making patrons feel at home with memorabilia cheering for the Eagles, Flyers and Phillies. The reason you visit this joint is for its steak sandwiches.  Made with thinly sliced ribeye steak and served with grilled onions, housemade marinara sauce and white American cheese (other cheeses are available), the sandwich can also be ordered with chicken. Stray a bit from an original and select one of Philly West’s other cheesesteak choices including mushroom cheesesteak, green bell pepper cheesesteak and a hoagie steak. Microbrewed beer on draft including Angel City, Anchor Steam and Widmer Hefeweizen can be ordered by the glass or pitcher; draft beers and bottled beers are available, too.

Figureoa Philly is owned by stand-up comic Danny Hizami, who makes his customers’ satisfaction a top priority. First and foremost, Hizami “imports” the famous Amoroso rolls, ensuring that each sandwich is unique. Flavorful rib eye steak or chicken are offered on the menu with a variety of choices including the Figureoa Philly created with choice of cheese, grilled onions, peppers and mushrooms, Italian style (pizza sauce), Texas style (BBQ sauce and onion rings) and Buffalo (Frank’s hot sauce).

Ronald Zangari Sr., aka “Pop,” was known for his pizza and cheesesteak stand in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the late 50s. Following in his dad’s footsteps decades later, Vinny Zangari opened a cheesesteak shop in Venice, California. Vinny’s is a walk-up on the Venice Beach Boardwalk to sate your cheesesteak fix, made with the freshest ingredients. The Vinny cheesesteak is why you come here -- it’s truly finger licking good. Made with sliced eye of round, American cheese, sauteed onions and Dad’s red sauce (a tomato herb sauce), the Vinny is awesome on its own or with a side cheese fries or onion rings.

Owned by Andrew Ahn and his Korean-American family, Boo’s Philly Cheesesteaks was named to honor their grandmother known as "Boo," who was from the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia. Boo's Philly Cheesesteaks know what they are doing. Each sandwich starts with one of Amoroso's hearth-baked rolls and is then filled with juicy grilled beef (chicken, too), choice of cheese (whiz, American or Provolone) and grilled onions. Customers can also add mushrooms and peppers. Boo's offers a rush hour special Monday through Friday, 4 to 7 p.m. Customers receive a cheesesteak and fountain drink for $7.
