Best Los Angeles Film Events In July

There is no lack of places this month for film buffs to hang out and see what they enjoy the most – movies. There is a series of film festivals happening in July that delve into local, international, lifestyle, new and known subjects, certain to satisfy the preferences of any film lover. From fancy movie houses to blankets on the lawn, the following should keep everybody happy at the movies.

There are still a few days left to enjoy the independent cinema showcase of the Downtown Film Festival, which continues until this Friday, July 13th. Its lineup showcases films that reflect Los Angeles' cultural diversity and the influence of our city in the shaping of American cinema. Anyone is allowed to submit their work for consideration, meaning that this festival might just discover the industry's next filmmaking star. The 5th annual Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival starts this Sunday, July 15th and continues until Thursday, July 19th. During its five days and nights, the festival will showcase over 40 works from Brazil, including feature films, shorts, documentaries, animations and more. This festival will also include a tribute to Brazilian writer Jorge Amado. Come out for the opening night gala and see the stars strut along the red carpet.

The 30th annual gay and lesbian film festival begins next week on July 12th and continues through July 22nd. Along with the 143 films from 24 countries, Outfest will host a variety of special events and panels at venues across Los Angeles, including Hollywood, West Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles. Outfest 2012 will open with Jeffrey Schwarz's documentary "Vito." Prior to the opening-night screening, the organization will present comedian, actor and filmmaker John Waters with its 16th annual Achievement Award.

The Los Angeles Reel Film Festival will be held July 25th and 26th when the winners of several categories will see their work screened at the Whitefire Theatre. This festival seeks out independent filmmakers and aims to acknowledge and award their craft and creativity. The festival provides a great opportunity for filmmakers to showcase their creations and for the public to see unique material from up-and-coming filmmakers.

Street Food Cinema is an ongoing summer event bringing together movies, live music and food trucks every Saturday through September 1st. Doors open weekly at 5:30 p.m., music starts at 6:30 p.m. and the movie begins at 8:30 p.m. Bring a blanket or a low chair, even some food and drink, and enjoy the series that continues this week with a screening of "X-Men."
