Best Live Dance Performances Coming To Los Angeles

Dance takes on all different interpretations, from classical to contemporary. Live dance performances offer audiences an up close perspective of the passion of an artist as well as the experience of seeing first hand the amazing result of a dancer's training. The summer of "16 offers Los Angeles audiences various dance performances to check out. Choreographed by some of industry's best dancers, these five live performances will take your breath away, leave you in contemplation and inspire all at the same time.

Dance enthusiasts will be delighted with the performance by the Shieldwall Dance Company at the Highway Performance Space in Santa Monica. Under the tutelage of creator and choreographer Sean Greene, Shieldwall Dance Company will perform The Family of Man, a poetry of original dance illustrated in a repertory of short programs. Dancers will depict the journey of human life from “birth to death, innocence and first love, intimacy and betrayal” in an engaging and visual performance. From 1968 through April 1987 Greene danced with the Bella Lewitzky Dance Company, touring, performing, and teaching all over the world. Highway Performance Space, in its 27th year, is an innovative center for bold, socially and culturally interesting visual and multimedia performance artists.

Pacific Festival Ballet, the resident ballet company of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, presents intriguing and unique performances that envelop classical and contemporary dance in Deep In the Woods and Kaleidoscope in the Scherr Forum Theatre. The whimsical performance follows an aspiring ballerina who is deep in the wood where favorite fairy tale characters “collide with Kaleidoscope.” Guest choreographers and returning company alumni appear in this repertoire. Pacific Festival Ballet, which was founded in 1992, is an exciting regional ballet company that nurtures talent and passion. Classic ballets as well as original works are performed throughout the season.

Maks and Val Chmerkovskiy, passionate dancers and brothers known for choreography on Dancing With The Stars and their love of Latin professional dancing, are on summer tour. The Chmerkovskiy duo will visit the Orpheum Theater on Aug.13 to present the art of Latin ballroom dancing. The lively dance performance will feature fellow professional dancers and collaborations with well-known industry choreographers. The Orpheum Theatre is a perfect DTLA venue for the Chmerkovskiy dance show. This theatre, which opened in 1926, saw plenty of live stage acts from the vaudeville days to burlesque shows, as well as great artists including Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Little Richard, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder.

Check out the latest and hottest moves by hip hop dancers in Driven, a culminating show featuring the best dancers from Monsters of HipHop Dance Convention. The Monsters Show project, which began 11 years ago, was created to introduce up-and-comers in the dance world to the industry and audiences. DRIVEN showcases a cast of passionate dancers who were chosen among thousands of dancers throughout the country to perform in The Monster Dance event of the year. Known for launching many careers of dancers such as choreographer JaQuel Knight (“Single Ladies” dance for Beyonce), Nick DeMoura (dancer and choreographer for Justin Bieber’s "Believe" tour) as well as Parris Goebel (choreographer for and danced with Jennifer Lopez). Many Monster Show alums have performed in music videos, on tour and in movies with world-renowned performers like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna and Usher.

L.A. Dances is a beautiful evening performance under the stars of Los Angeles at the outdoor venue, the Hollywood Bowl. Presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conducted by Ludovic Morlot, L.A. Dances is a lively piece featuring dancers from local dance companies Bodytraffic (founded by Lillian Barbeito and Tina Finkelman Berkett), Ate9 Dance Company (founded by Danielle Agami) and LA Dance Project (Benjamin Millepied). The works of three L.A. based composers rounded out by Stravinsky's Rite program will be brought to life through a compilation of dance styles.
