Janet Rothstein from J. Rothstein Jewelers recommends to her young clients (4 years and older) to pinch their ears really hard before coming in for ear piercing. “It’s good practice for them and they will know what it kind of feels like,” says Rothstein. For more than 20 years, Rothstein has been piercing ears of kids, teens and adults. Certified by Studex, the ear piercing studs manufacturer in the United States, Rothstein’s technique ($32 including earrings) is thorough. She cleans ears with alcohol, front and back and uses Neosporin pain relief cream. Using a non-toxic pen, she marks each ear, pierces the ears with high-quality 24K gold surgical studs, so the hole is straight and clean, and gives her clients an ice pack to relieve any discomfort. Earrings are bezel-set so there aren’t any prongs to catch on clothing or hair, and the training posts are thicker to maintain the hole. Clients go home with an after-care sheet and an appointment for follow up. Piercing is done by appointment only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Known for being extremely gentle, Piercing Pagoda specializes in piercing children’s ears. These piercing professionals work with children 2 months old and up who have received their first DPT vaccination, and who are accompanied with an identified parent or legal guardian. To avoid discomfort and any nervous butterflies, Piercing Pagoda suggests having both ears pierced at the same time by two different piercers, and if the child is unsettled prior to the experience, Piercing Pagoda often recommends the family to return at another time when the child is more ready. Piercing is free to customers who purchase a pair of earrings, which average an estimated $40 for 14K. Anyone younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
