Not every nightlife trip has to be expensive, and one way to cut down on the cost, hassle and discomfort is to head to locations that aren't all about the booze. Orange County has plenty of sober entertainment to keep you occupied and content, and this list is sure to give you some ideas of where to start your journey.

From puppetry to live theater, improv to Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Maverick Theater hosts a wide range of nighttime thrills for those looking for something a little off-the-beaten path. Students get in cheaper to most shows, but those headed to Improv Shmimprov on Friday and Saturday nights can cough up a measly $5 to laugh their butts off. Whether you are catching a game of amateur hockey or roller derby, The Rinks in Huntington Beach offers a wide variety of athletics and spectator sports. Beginning Memorial Day Weekend and running all through the summer, Movies on the Beach at the Newport Dunes is a great way to spend a weekend night. Cheap parking and plenty of sitting space should make for a comfortable night of cinema. Bring whatever food or drink you crave, just be sure to keep the beach looking as clean as it was when you got there and bring warm clothes, because it gets frosty during the night.

During the day, Dana Wharf offers a few different options, such as whale watching and sport fishing, but it's the nightlife that will keep you around. Every Saturday night Dana Wharf launches a live music cruise, a 90-minute, 18 and older trip around the bay while jamming to some excellent tunes. Even better, you get to enjoy the sunset while on the 95-foot boat and bask in the gorgeous scenery as the ride presents the sunset right in front of you.
