Presumably a paid homage to the annual European snowboarding competition in which Shaun White took home top honors in 2005, the fusion of some of music's biggest names and the massive 16-story snowboard jump is right at home in Los Angeles. White's second installment of the multi-faceted festival is set to takeover Exposition Park at the Coliseum for two days with main stage appearances from the likes of Incubus, J.Cole, Haim, Kaskade, Travis Barker and more. Between the music, the art installations on the grounds and activations from the hottest in technology and fashion, the world's snowboarding elite will be flying through the skies to compete for bragging rights. This is one of the city's hottest tickets.

Yet another aspect to L.A.'s famed Griffith Park is one lesser known, but historically important. Back in 1947, the city's superintendent of recreation, William Fredrickson Jr. began amassing a collection of transportation collectibles that ranged from vintage fighter planes to a stunning Southern Pacific locomotive. Still free to the public, the 9-acre stretch of land is devoted to the history of transport and offers an up-close and personal glimpse into the different era of getting to and fro. Kids can climb into a horse carriage, circus wagon, and of course, the jewel of a locomotive that calls Griffith Park home.

Now more than ever it seems as though the community for all things comic book, collectible, and pop culture is more robust and thriving than it ever has been. Less niche, the notion of a convention is not only common, but frequent. For the folks behind the Long Beach Comic Book Expo, years of devotion and experience is being met with the kind of enthusiasm that has made this particular expo one of the most anticipated events of the year. Signings, appearances, and endless rows of tangible, take home versions of pop culture anchor the event, but really the expo is an shining example of just how sincere the community is. Whether comics and cosplay is your thing, a visit to the LBC is a sure good time this weekend.

Home to one of the most extensive collections of Ice Age fossils anywhere, the LA Brea Tar Pits have long been essential in the scheme of the city's history. Continuing to uncover important relicts of paleontology, the folks at the Tar Pits are in the middle of something called Project 23, an effort that will likely double the existing collection of mammoths and saber-toothed tigers that can be found on the grounds. A expertly curated experience that combines both education with preservation, the LA Brea Tar Pits is a fundamental glimpse into a prehistoric world that is literally in our backyard.
