Beholder won the $2 million Distaff by 4 1/4 lengths Friday at Santa Anita, spoiling Royal Delta’s bid for a third straight victory at the Breeders’ Cup, with veteran jockeys Gary Stevens and Mike Smith dominating on opening day.

Royal Delta won the $2 million Ladies’ Classic by 1 1/2 lengths on Friday at Santa Anita, making the defending champion the only favorite to win on an upset-filled opening day of the Breeders’ Cup.
Bill Mott is in position to duplicate the ultimate daily double. The Hall of Fame trainer swept the $2 million Ladies’ Classic and $5 million Classic at last year’s Breeders’ Cup. He could do it again this weekend, with Royal Delta defending her Ladies’ title and three of his horses running in the big race.
The Ladies’ Classic is clearly the best race of Breeders’ Cup weekend which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The field of eight fillies and mares have won a combined fifty-seven races from ninety-four starts, an incredible 60% winning percentage.
