The latest voyage of the starship Enterprise fell short of its predecessor, 2009′s “Star Trek,” which opened with $75.2 million.

Since premiering Wednesday in huge-screen IMAX theaters and expanding Thursday to general cinemas, “Into Darkness” has pulled in $84.1 million, well below distributor Paramount’s initial forecast of $100 million. The film added $40 million overseas, pushing its total to $80.5 million since it began rolling out internationally a week earlier.

The “Star Trek” sequel bumped “Iron Man 3″ down to second place after two weekends on top. Robert Downey Jr.’s superhero saga took in $35.2 million domestically to lift its receipts to $337.1 million. Overseas, “Iron Man 3″ added $40.2 million, raising its international total to $736.2 million and its worldwide tally to nearly $1.1 billion.

While “Iron Man 3″ and “Into Darkness” did well overseas, they were outmatched by the debut of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” which followed its domestic debut a week earlier with a wide rollout internationally. “Gatsby” pulled in $42.1 million overseas, coming in a bit ahead of both “Iron Man 3″ and “Into Darkness.”

Domestically, “Gatsby” held up well at No. 3 with $23.4 million, lifting its total to $90.2 million.

In today’s Hollywood of bigger, better sequels, follow-up films often outdo the box office of their predecessors, as each “Iron Man” sequel has done. While “Into Darkness” earned good reviews and is getting strong word-of-mouth from fans, the film did not quite measure up to the opening weekend of director J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot from four years ago, at least domestically.

“‘Star Trek’ remains a fan-boy movie. It doesn’t seem to have the same kind of cross-over appeal as say an ‘Iron Man’ or some of these others,” said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. “It’s a very specific brand, but I think the general public would love this movie, because it’s such an action movie. But to get a hundred-million-plus opening weekend, unless you’re ‘Twilight,’ you really have to cross over to all audiences.”

Paramount points out that overseas business is up in many markets, though, so that worldwide, the sequel is off to a better start.

“Because of the nature of the franchise, because of how many movies have been made and the various forms of the TV shows, I’m not sure that ‘Star Trek’ goes by the rules of normal sequels. I think each movie stands on its own, because it’s a unique franchise,” said Don Harris, Paramount’s head of distribution. “My goal was always that we grow the franchise. We’re clearly seeing by today’s numbers that the movie is being embraced on a worldwide basis in a way we’ve never seen before.”

Harris said that domestically, “Into Darkness” finished its first weekend 6 percent ahead of revenues for 2009′s “Star Trek,” which got a head-start with $4 million in Thursday night previews to give it a $79.2 million haul through the first Sunday.

But “Into Darkness” had a full day of screenings Thursday plus its Wednesday IMAX business. Unlike the first movie, which played only in 2-D, the sequel also had the benefit of 3-D screenings that cost a few dollars more. Yet even with the 3-D upcharge and the earlier debut, it came away with just $4.9 million more than its predecessor through Sunday.

Still, it’s a solid starting place for the movie to live long and prosper at theaters, with Paramount hoping “Into Darkness” can surpass the $385 million worldwide total of “Star Trek.”

“I think we’re well along on that road,” Harris said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

TUSTIN (CBSLA.com) — A local Navy pilot missing since the Vietnam War has been buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Forty-six years after being killed in action, the U.S. Navy honored Lt. Dennis Peterson of Huntington Park and his crew during an interment ceremony on May 2.

Kirsten Peterson, the late lieutenant’s daughter, attended the burial along with her younger sister.

“I wanted to know more about what my father was all about,” said Peterson, who was only two when her father went to war. “Having somewhere to go. Having somewhere to remember him by. We didn’t have any of that.”

Lt. Peterson was 27 when he left to serve in the Vietnam War on March 27, 1967.

Four months later, his family learned that he was killed in action when the SH-3A helicopter he was piloting was shot down in Ha Nam Province of North Vietnam.

He, along with three other sailors, were killed.

“Three of those men … their remains were brought back in 1982. But they didn’t find anything for my dad,” she said.

Kirsten says U.S. excavation teams went back to the crash site in 1999 and found more remains. Two months ago, she got word that her father’s remains were identified through forensic testing.

She said having her father finally honored was all her late mother, Sharon, ever wanted.

“It was incredible. There were so many people there. And when you saw these people coming to pay respect for your dad, it meant a lot,” she said.

Officials say one of the winning tickets was sold at a 7-Eleven convenience store at 1124 6th Street in Taft. The other was sold at a 7-Eleven in San Jose.

National lottery officials say one ticket bearing all six winning numbers was sold in Florida, with the winning ticket worth an estimated $590.5 million — the highest Powerball jackpot in history.

Winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim their prize, lottery officials said.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says a deputy fatally shot a man in the Florence area of South Los Angeles.

The shooting took place in the 6100 block of Miramonte Boulevard just after 9 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators described the suspect as being armed and said he was riding his bicycle erratically.

Deputies say at one point, the suspect began fighting with them and a deputy-involved shooting ensued.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

No deputies were injured.

Authorities say a handgun was recovered at the scene.

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — For the first time on American soil, dozens of life-size elephant sculptures will be on display in Dana Point as part of the Elephant Parade.

Dana Yarger, the Elephant Parade Ambassador, appeared on KCAL9 News on Sunday morning to discuss the parade which is the world’s largest outdoor art exhibition in support of the endangered Asian elephant.

The Elephant Parade has been held in London, Milan, Singapore, Amsterdam, and the UK.

At the end of each two-month exhibition, Yarger says the elephants are auctioned with proceeds going toward efforts to save the Asian elephant.

Yarger says the elephants on display have just arrived from Thailand.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Sunday continued to search for a woman suspected in a burglary-turned-robbery in North Hollywood.

Los Angeles police say the incident occurred about 9 a.m. on May 8 at the Laurel Canyon Apartments in Valley Village.

The suspect, described by police as a Hispanic female with black hair and brown eyes, allegedly made her way into an unlocked door of Eileen Pasternak’s lower-level unit.

“I said, ‘What are you doing here? Who are you?’ I was so freaked out,” Pasternak said. “There’s this woman in my dining room with her arms filled with stuff … my stuff.”

Pasternak, who lost one arm in a lion attack three decades ago, says that’s when things got physical. But when her attacker recognized her disability, Pasternak says she ran away.

Police say suspect is believed to be between 18 and 20 years old.

She is accused of making off with Pasternak’s credit cards and jewelry, including a diamond ring.

Security photos of the woman just released by police were obtained from local businesses where the woman allegedly used Pasternak’s credit cards.

“She got herself a manicure and a pedicure. She bought doughnuts. She bought clothes,” Pasternak said.

Although her landlord changed her locks, Pasternak says she intends to move as the security door’s lock remains broken.

PALMDALE (CBSLA.com) — Mass Sunday is expected to take place outside a Palmdale church a day after authorities say the main chapel was flooded by vandals.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says the Horizon Community Church in the 1800 block of East Avenue R was the site of a break-in about 10 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities believe the suspects made their way through a glass window. Once inside, deputies say the vandals trashed several offices and rooms and broke into a safe stored on the grounds.

Authorities say nothing of major value was taken from that safe.

Before leaving, deputies say the vandals unrolled a fire hose and turned it on, flooding the main chapel and several rooms.

“Just kind of a sad, sad moment but we’re not gonna let it get at us. We’re not gonna let it bother us. We’re gonna keep going,” said Pastor K.C. Wahe.

Authorities say the church was a target of another break-in just a day prior. In that instance, a guitar was stolen.

No arrests have been made.

SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA.com) — The National Weather Service Sunday issued a wind advisory through the morning for the mountains and high desert of Los Angeles County.

The advisory through 11 a.m. predicts dry, gusty winds through the Interstate 5 corridor and across the Antelope Valley.

According to the NWS, the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale will also be impacted.

The advisory anticipates gusts of 45 mph or greater.

High winds can pose a danger for drivers, especially those of large, high profile vehicles.

Motorists along the State Route 14 and the 138, as well as, the 5 Freeway are urged to exercise caution.

INGLEWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Inglewood Police shot and killed a man Saturday evening they said was on a rampage in a police parking lot.

Around 6 p.m. they said the man started smashing the windows of eight squad cars with a long, sword-like weapon.

The blade was “18 inches or more,” said Lt. Mark Fried.

It was unclear how many officers opened fire on the man.

Police said the suspect was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

His name and age were being withheld until his next of kin could be notified.

No motive was given for the rampage. No officers were injured.

No California residents had all six numbers in the Saturday record draw.

$600 million was up for grabs.

Two tickets in California had 5/5 matches (no Powerball.) Those $1 million tickets were both sold at 7-Elevens in San Jose and Taft.

One ticket matched all six numbers — sold at at Publix Supermarket in Zephyrhills, Florida. According to Wikipedia, the median income in Zephyrhills (a town of about 10,800 people in Pasco County) is $33,000. Well, that is surely going to go up.

The winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and the Powerball 11.

The next jackpot will be $40 million — not exactly a modest sum. Still not $600 million!

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Draws for the $2 game are Wednesdays and Saturdays. Powerball starts at $40 million. The record jackpot — prior to tonight’s — reached $588 million in November 2012.

Sheriff’s Homicide detectives report that 31-year-old Juan Alexander Mejia Dubon, wanted for the murder of his father — Canyon Country resident Juan Mejia — has been taken into custody.

Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) Sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop Saturday afternoon on a vehicle being driven by the suspect. Dubon was taken into custody without incident.

Officials said no weapons were recovered.

Dubon is charged with murder and was booked at the SCV Sheriff’s Station. Dubon is being held in lieu of $1,000,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in the San Fernando Court on Monday, May 20.

Tom Kim, 37, and his common-law wife, Molly Hwang, 45, were arrested on Thursday.

They were charged with illegally cultivating marijuana, possession of marijuana and hashish for sale, child endangerment and conducting a business in the city of Rancho Palos Verdes without a license.

Lomita Station patrol units and detectives had been responding to a burglary investigation in the 27800 block of Altafora Drive.

Officials said a suspect matching the burglary suspect inside a parked car in the 2000 block of Noble View Drive made them surround the suspect’s house.

A male, later identified as Kim, emerged from the house and was met by deputies.

While clearing the home from the burglary investigation, officials said they “stumbled” upon the elaborate and extensive pot operation.

Detectives reportedly located numerous marijuana plants in the backyard and throughout the house. In one room, detectives found numerous glass jars filled with marijuana buds, packaging and scales. Another room was used as a dry room where deputies found hundreds of plants hanging from a clothesline.

Detectives said they also found evidence of hashish manufacturing, concentrated cannabis, and packaging for sales. A washing machine in the backyard was located and believed to be used to make hashish from the marijuana plants. The suspects were possibly supplying marijuana to dispensaries, but had no documentation indicating they were operating a legit business.

Authorities seized nearly 100 pounds of marijuana and approximately $10,000 cash. Based upon quantity of the drug and moneys seized, detectives believe this was a $1 million dollar a year operation.

Hwang turned herself in to authorities at Lomita Station. The couple’s minor child, who was at school during the search, was taken into protective custody by deputies.

Kim and Hwang were released on a $100,000 bond. An arraignment date is scheduled for Kim on Friday, June 14  in Torrance Superior Court. Hwang’s arraignment date was set for Thursday, June 6, also at Torrance Superior Court.

Authorities identified the man as 35-year-old Tony Nim of Alhambra.

For unknown reasons, Nim entered a police station in the 200 block of S. 1st Street carrying what was was described as “a very large knife.”

The shooting occurred at around 7:25 a.m., according to LA County Sheriff Lt. Dave Coleman.

Three officers were confirmed to have fired their weapons, Coleman said.

Kris Medlen, Cory Gearrin, and Craig Kimbrel combined on a two-hitter for Atlanta.

Chris Capuano led 1-0 before he allowed a one-out single to B.J. Upton in the eighth. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly brought in Jansen (1-2), the hard-throwing right-hander, to face Gattis, a rookie pinch-hitter.

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — The body of a female has been found in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Officials said an autopsy would confirm if the body belonged to Karen Dalman, a 59-year-old hiker who was reported missing on Thursday May 16.

Dalman was on a Crystal Mountain day hike with a friend and they got separated on Tuesday when he went to chase after his dog. After two days of walking, her friend — 56-year-old Bruce Jackson — found his way back to his car and immediately reported Dalman missing.  A search and rescue operation began had been ongoing since Thursday morning.

Her son, Dan Neilsen, joined the search Friday telling KCAL9, “My mother doesn’t hike. I’ll tell you that right now.”

A team of ground search members located the body of a deceased female Saturday in the area approximately one mile from where the search began.  It is in a remote area, at mid-elevation in a natural drainage, according to officials.

Big Bear Station personnel, along with the Coroner are enroute to the location to conduct an investigation.

No additional information is available at this time.  Updates will be released as new information becomes available.

Officers said in a department statement that the victim from Irvine was driving a grey BMW coupe when witnesses say he lost control and crashed into a tree.

The accident on Bristol Street occurred about 9:03 p.m. Friday.

Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger inside the vehicle, identified as a 21-year-old woman, sustained head trauma and fractured ribs.

She was taken to Western Medical Center for treatment.

The statement said both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

No further information was provided.

Police said Saturday the man fled after the driver told him she was calling the California Highway Patrol.

The bus driver says she stopped Friday afternoon when a silver-colored sedan pulled behind her and began flashing blue-and-red lights.

A man in his 30s, who was dressed in civilian clothes, emerged from the car and told her he was a police officer.

He flashed a badge and had a card clipped to his shirt with the word “Investigator” written across the top in red.

The driver says the man got back into his car and drove away after she told him she was calling the CHP.

THOUSAND PALMS  (AP) — The little dog left tied to the railroads tracks as a train approached is moving to a new home.

The pooch named Banjo will live with Jeff and Louisa Moore of Huntington Beach. The couple also have a Tibetan terrier named Lali.

The Moores picked up Banjo Friday at a Riverside County shelter.

More than 1,300 people volunteered to adopt the dog after hearing of his plight.

Animal services officials settled on the Moores because they live close to the beach and near a dog park — and because they checked on Banjo’s well-being nearly every day.

A Union Pacific crew halted a freight train in the desert near Palm Springs last month after seeing an elderly man tie Banjo to the railroad tracks.

The blaze dubbed the Lake Fire was 85 percent contained, as of 5 p.m. Saturday.

The fast-moving broke out Friday afternoon near Castaic Road and quickly spread to 600 acres. At last word, the fire had scorched 712 acres.

The flames at one point got dangerously close to Northlake Hills Elementary School, prompting officials to place the campus on lockdown.

Nearby homes on Elk Ridge Road and Vista Point Place also had to be evacuated.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes approximately four hours later.

A spark from a car is blamed for igniting the fire.

Pasadena police Lt. Vasken Gourdikian says the male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred about 9:40 p.m. near Berkeley Avenue.

Gourdikian said the driver stopped at the scene.

Police closed Colorado Boulevard between Berkeley and Greenwood avenues for the investigation. Motorists were warned to avoid the area.

Deputies with the Hemet Sheriff Station responded to Humber Park just after 11:31 a.m. Friday following a report of an injured rock climber.

Upon arriving on scene, they located the victim who they pronounced dead.

He has since been identified as Lucas Dunn.

No further information was immediately available.

Hamilton originally was scheduled to bat fifth, but was replaced in right field by Mark Trumbo — who had been slotted as the designated hitter. Instead, Albert Pujols was shifted from first base to DH and Brendan Harris was inserted as the first baseman.

Which made it all the harder for Compton residents to accept the news this week that their former battalion chief had been charged with arson and embezzlement, accused of setting a blaze at the Fire Department’s headquarters to hide the theft of radio equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The 15-year department veteran pleaded not guilty Friday. He could be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

“I’m hurt for him. I’m hurt for his family, and I’m hurt for the city of Compton for losing such an upstanding role model,” City Councilwoman Yvonne Arceneaux told the Los Angeles Times.

Melanson, who moved up rapidly through the ranks, gained an even higher profile in Compton in 2009 when he was featured prominently in the BET reality series “First In.”

Compton has struggled financially over the years, as it battled the image of a place dominated by gang violence, drive-by shootings and political corruption. Melanson and others said at the time they hoped “First In” would help the city overcome that image.

The show focused on both the dangers Compton firefighters faced on the job and how they unwound during their time away from work with their families. Melanson, 37, once said it resulted in a police officer pulling him over just to ask for an autograph.

“He was a very talented employee, very sharp, moved up through the ranks very quickly,” Compton Fire Department Deputy Chief Bryan Batiste told the Times. “We’re all praying for him.”

Melanson was jailed in lieu of $350,000 bail. He was arrested following an investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Long Beach Fire Department.

He had been placed on administrative leave soon after the fire and was dismissed by the Fire Department in February.

His attorney, Robert Rico, told the Times a Long Beach Fire Department investigator originally determined the blaze was not arson but later changed his opinion.

“I don’t believe my client committed this crime, and I’m concerned about an alleged expert changing his opinion,” Rico said.

The FBI said in a statement that the so-called “Make It Quick Bandit” is accused in a tenth robbery. It occurred at a U.S. Bank branch inside a Vons supermarket in Gardena.

Described as a Hispanic male with dark hair that is possibly thinning on top, the suspect got his moniker because of the instructions he allegedly gives tellers, the statement said.

The FBI said the heists began in Jan. 2009 and occurred in the areas of San Pedro, Inglewood, Carson, Gardena, and Torrance.

A $10,000 reward is being offered by U.S. Bank for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

The unidentified suspect with a goatee stands at 5’10″ to 6’01″ and weighs between 200 to 230 pounds. He is believed to be between 25 to 35 years of age.

Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is asked to contact the nearest FBI office or dial 911.

Though the law was signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007, it couldn’t be implemented because of patents on the technology.

Attorney General Kamala Harris announced on Friday that the California Department of Justice no longer had a patent issue.

The law doesn’t impact semiautomatic pistols already being sold legally and those on the state’s firearm roster, only new models.

One gun rights group, the Calguns Foundation, extended a patent by paying a $555 fee to delay the law’s implementation.

The group believes the law is effectively a ban on new guns because of the burdens on manufacturers.

The deal to bring Freeney to the Chargers came four days after outside linebacker Melvin Ingram tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a padless practice.

The addition of Freeney also helps cushion the loss of outside linebackers Antwan Barnes and Shaun Phillips to free agency.

Freeney is 33 and entering his 12th season. He will make $5.25 million this season.

He was Indianapolis’ career sacks leader with 107 ½ but the Colts decided not to re-sign him in the offseason. After recording 13 ½ sacks in 2009, his totals declined each of the past three years. He had five in 2012.

Freeney, a seven-time Pro Bowler, never seemed comfortable after moving from a 4-3 defensive end, where he spent his first 10 NFL seasons, to a 3-4 outside linebacker. The Chargers run a 3-4 defense.

Freeney was the 11th overall selection in the 2002 draft. During his time with the Colts, he combined with Robert Mathis to form one of the most fearsome pass-rush tandems in the league. His 44 forced fumbles are the most by any NFL player since 2002 and he was one of 13 players in Colts’ history to participate in more than 100 victories.

Freeney led the NFL with 16 sacks in 2004.

Chargers rookie general manager Tom Telesco was with the Colts before being hired by San Diego in January.

The fire at the two-story home in the 5500 block of N. Western broke out about 4:12 p.m. Friday.

A statement issued by the San Bernardino City Fire Department says the unidentified teen was doing her homework while babysitting when she heard a smoke detector sound.

She searched each room for the fire and then realized that it was in her mother’s locked room.

The girl then sprang into action, locating her siblings; twins ages two-and-a-half and 11-year-old brother. All four exited the home unharmed.

She alerted authorities. Four fire engines and 22 firefighters and one chief officer arrived on scene. The fire was put out within minutes.

The statement says the fire caused an estimate $240,000 in damage.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown.

SAN DIEGO (CBSLA.com) — A San Diego man believes there’s always room to learn and he’s living proof.

Wally Taibleson Friday received his Master of Arts in Education from Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM) at the age of 90.

The degree marked his fourth.

Taibleson already has two master’s degrees from the college.

He has also earned a bachelor’s in history, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

“Any time that you can devote to improving your mind and increasing your learning is valuable for you as well as those you associate with,” Taibleson said.

Taibleson is the oldest student in the California State University system and the oldest graduate of CSUSM, according to the school’s website.

That sandy line that long defined the state’s disparate beach culture may soon fade.

In search of new revenue, the state parks system is eyeing parking fees for parts of the Northern California shoreline where none existed or considering hiking rates to visit popular beaches south of Los Angeles during peak periods.

The need to raise money is facing resistance from state coastal regulators concerned about eroding beach access and from environmentalists, who say it’s akin to monetizing the coast. And with beach season just weeks away, the issue is heating up.

Out of California’s 1,100 miles of beach, a third is controlled by the state Department of Parks and Recreation. Officials say they’re under legislative orders to seek new sources of revenue and that a revamp of the parking payment structure is necessary to keep beaches open and to fund deferred maintenance.

During a legislative hearing in February, state parks director Anthony Jackson said Southern California beaches are operating in the black and are partly subsidizing less profitable state beaches.

The agency is taking a hard look at “adjusting fees where appropriate and necessary and in places where fees may not have been historically collected,” said the ex-Marine who was hired to turn around the department after a financial mismanagement scandal.

Some local officials, state lawmakers and coastal commissioners have questioned whether the money would be used for its intended purpose.

Earlier this year, a proposal to charge more during certain holidays at several Orange County and San Diego County beaches was yanked from the California Coastal Commission’s agenda as the two sides worked behind-the-scenes to hammer out a deal.

Even before state parks sought to squeeze more out of revenue-generating beaches, it looked northward where excursions to the Pacific traditionally have been free. Save for a few lots that charge, the rugged Sonoma coast north of San Francisco has long been a spot where visitors pull over on the highway to dip in the ocean.

So when state parks wanted to install 15 self-pay machines that would collect $8 per vehicle, the Sonoma County zoning board shot it down at the behest of residents. The state protested and the county board of supervisors will hear the appeal next month.

“We’re not Southern California,” said Cea Higgins, a volunteer coordinator with the Surfrider Foundation’s Sonoma coast chapter. “We’re used to having free parking.”

Park officials contend they should be allowed to charge fees in sections along the Sonoma coast where there are restrooms, garbage cans and picnic tables to maintain. A similar effort last year to charge for parking at some Mendocino County beaches was also met with local opposition.

Coastal regulators in February were set to vote on state parks’ plan to charge a flat $20 fee — up from $15 — during Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and special events at several Southern California beaches. Commission staff wanted an hourly option so that daytrippers can still afford to head seaward during the busiest times.

Brian Ketterer, superintendent of the state parks’ Orange Coast District, said it doesn’t make business sense to offer an hourly rate during prime holidays. Families can still enjoy the beach during less busy times, he said.

“No one wants to keep people out” of state beaches, Ketterer said. “It’s a matter of ensuring that we’re sustainable in the future.”

Though the coastal commission and state parks have publicly pledged to work together to balance each other’s missions, the two sides have yet to reconcile their differences. The commission hopes to hear the issue in June.

“We’re still fine-tuning” the details, said commission executive director Charles Lester, adding that his priority is making sure any new or higher fees “don’t unnecessarily restrict or impact public access.”

It’s the latest clash of dueling missions. The coastal panel recently butted heads with Southern California’s clean-air agency over the ubiquitous fire rings that dot the Orange County coastal city of Newport Beach. Commission staff favored keeping bonfires lit because they provide inexpensive family recreation.

Luke Carlson, who avoids surfing along the Orange County coast during holidays since it is hard to catch a good wave in crowded waters, said he understands others may not have the same luxury and fears higher parking fees will deter them from getting on their boards.

Carlson, a lawyer, said there’s no reason why Northern California beachgoers can’t pay to park like their Southern California brethren.

“We already pay,” he said. “For us to pay even more, that doesn’t seem reasonable.”

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Several dozen people Saturday lined up outside a Hawthorne liquor store to purchase tickets for the much-anticipated Powerball drawing.

Fueled by a desire to win, lottery hopefuls flocked to Bluebird Liquor in the 13700 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, where four jackpots have previously been sold.

Each of those winning tickets had paid out over a million dollars. The liquor store has also been a hot spot for other smaller pay-outs.

“There are winners here already. You never know. There might be another winner. That’s why I’m here,” said Thomas, one store patron.

The $600 jackpot is the largest in Powerball history. The previous record jackpot reached $588 million in November of last year.

The multi-state jackpot is played in 45 jurisdictions. The $2-per-play Powerball game arrived in California this past April.

The cash value of Saturday’s jackpot is $376.9 million.

LOS FELIZ (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles police Friday continued to search for a man suspected in the dognapping of a 5-pound deaf Yorkie.

The missing pooch named Walter was taken from Tricia O’Kelley’s Los Feliz home.

The accomplished Hollywood actress noticed Walter missing from the family’s yard on Thursday and then received a call from a blocked number.

“I totally knew the second I heard the guy’s voice that he was not a good guy,” she said.

O’Kelley said that’s when things went from bad to worse.

“It was like a movie. ‘I want $1,000 and I want you to post flyers that say Reward: $1,000,’” she said.

The family made flyers and contacted police who planned to send a plainclothes officer with them to a Hollywood Chevron to make the exchange when the suspect called and said he saw police.

“My husband said, ‘What are you talking about? I’m still posting the flyers that you told me to post.’ And that’s when he said, ‘You’re lying to me and I’m [expletive] keeping your dog’,” she said.

It turned out the suspect called from a 7-Eleven payphone in North Hollywood but likely had it scouted and the police car … a bad coincidence, CBS2′s Serene Branson reports.

O’Kelley feels this isn’t the first time they’ve done this but Walter is not puppy. He’s an older dog with health issues.

“I’ve had him since he was two months old and he could fit into my hand. I’ve had him longer than my children. Longer than my husband,” she said.

Walter is microchipped. The family is just asking that he be turned into a shelter or veterinary office. No questions asked.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Wide-eyed and amazed visitors of the California Science Center come from all over to get an up-close and personal look at one of man’s engineering marvels: the Endeavour.

“The Endeavour ties into the explorer in all of us. People come here and they have tears in their eyes,” said Diane Perlov, Ph.D., Deputy Director for Exhibits.

The space shuttle, though, is not the only exhibit at the center which is located at 700 Exposition Park Drive.

It’s just the beginning.

There are several others, including the Ecosystem, which features a walk-through aquarium.

“It’s a place to be immersed in science to be able to have fun with these hands-on exhibits with your family and friends,” Perlov said.

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) —A Los Angeles doctor was sentenced Friday to 14 years in federal prison for bilking patients out of more than $1 million by promising them that an herbal supplement she hawked could cure late-stage cancer and other diseases.

U.S. District Judge Robert Timilin also ordered Dr. Christine Daniel to forfeit $1,277,083.

Daniel, 58, was found guilty of 11 counts, including wire fraud, tax evasion and witness tampering in September 2011.

She enticed patients to take her herbal product and charged them as much as $100,000 for a six-month treatment program that she claimed could cure cancer, diabetes and multiple sclerosis, authorities said.

Some of her patients, however, died from complications of cancer within three to six months after taking the supplement. In one case, prosecutors contend a 22-year-old woman who had a highly curable form of neck lymphoma died because she relied on Daniel’s recommendation to avoid radiation or chemotherapy treatments.

“The scope of Daniel’s fraud was breathtaking,” U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement after Daniel was sentenced. “Daniel robbed victims of more than money — she also stole their hopes and dreams for a cure. Daniel is responsible for a shockingly cold-hearted fraud that has brought her a richly deserved federal prison sentence.”

Prosecutors sought a 27-year prison term, while Daniel’s attorney argued that nearly six years behind bars was more appropriate.

In all, authorities believe Daniel siphoned about $1.1 million from dozens of families between 2001 and 2004.

Some patients also endured additional pain and suffering because they took the herbal tonic provided by Daniel.

At trial, experts called by federal prosecutors said chemical tests of the product showed it contained beef extract flavoring and a sunscreen preservative, among other ingredients.

“I live with the guilt that I should have seen that none of what she was going through was helping her, but instead was hurting her,” Debra Harris wrote in a letter submitted to the court about her sister Barbara Davis, who was one of Daniel’s patients and who later died. Harris said Daniel’s patients were not only convinced they could be cured, but so were family members who “wanted to believe it just as bad.”

Paula Middlebrooks also put her faith in Daniel, who billed her nearly $60,000 over a five-month period to help treat her terminal breast cancer. Eventually, Daniel pronounced Middlebrooks free of cancer and threw her a party.

“Paula believed that she was going to live. Dr. Daniel, to me, brainwashed her,” said Tammie Fleming, Middlebrooks’ sister.

In reality, the cancer was spreading.

When Middlebrooks went back to her home in Georgia, a doctor performing back surgery discovered the cancer was far from gone.

“He said…I cleaned up what I could, (but) the cancer was oozing like oatmeal,” said Fleming.

Middlebrooks died 27 days later.

Federal prosecutors said Daniel preyed upon people in their most vulnerable state.

Daniel “repeatedly demonstrated a merciless and callous indifference to the suffering of her patients and their family members,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Johns wrote in court documents. “It is unlikely that our federal criminal justice system will see the like of defendant Christine Daniel again.”

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS/AP) — Orange County residents gathered Friday to participate in an ongoing debate about a Southern California tradition—beach bonfires.

Newport Beach wants to remove 33 fire rings near Balboa Pier and another 27 on a stretch of Corona del Mar State Beach after some residents complained of smoke and other health-related issues.

The city’s request prompted air quality regulators to propose a ban of nearly 850 bonfires along miles of coastline in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The city of Huntington Beach fears that if the South Coast Air Quality Management District approves the ban, they will lose nearly $1 million in parking revenue each year.

On Friday, the mayors of Huntington Beach and Santa Ana listened while supporters and opponents of the fire pits had their say at a meeting at Huntington Beach City Hall.

“Especially when we talk about revenue, I think it’s sad if we put revenue above the health of the children who are breathing the smoke on an ongoing basis,” said Julie Sandercock.

“Think about the people who are complaining about the fire pits in Newport. There are a small number of them. Then think about the people who use the fire pits all over California and the amount of tourists who come and use them. That’s a whole lot more, thousands more, possibly millions,” said fifth-grader Emily Fitzpatrick.

The AQMD was set to vote on the ban June 7, but the hearing was pushed back to a later date for more air quality tests.

LAKE VIEW TERRACE (CBSLA.com) — A suspect was hurt in an officer-involved shooting in Lake View Terrace Friday evening.

The LAPD’s Foothill Division initially responded to an officer needs help call near the 210 Freeway and Van Nuys Boulevard.

Police were then forced to fire at a suspect.

The man was transported to the hospital in unknown condition.

Another suspect, described as a heavy-set male, fled the scene. He was arrested soon after the shooting following a brief search.

No officers were wounded.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.
