HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Several dozen people Saturday lined up outside a Hawthorne liquor store to purchase tickets for the much-anticipated Powerball drawing.

Fueled by a desire to win, lottery hopefuls flocked to Bluebird Liquor in the 13700 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, where four jackpots have already been sold.

Each of those winning tickets had paid out over a million.

The liquor store has also been a hot spot for other smaller pay-outs.

“There are winners here already. You never know. There might be another winner. That’s why I’m here,” said Thomas, one store patron.

The $600 jackpot is the largest in Powerball history. The previous record jackpot reached $588 million in November of last year.

The multi-state jackpot is played in 45 jurisdictions. The $2-per-play Powerball game arrived in California this past April.

The cash value of Saturday’s jackpot is $376.9 million.

Tune in to KCAL9 at 7:59 p.m. to watch the Powerball drawing.

[worldnow id=8894251 width=420 height=315 type=video]

LOS FELIZ (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles police Friday continued to search for a man suspected in the dognapping of a 5-pound deaf Yorkie.

The missing pooch named Walter was taken from Tricia O’Kelley’s Los Feliz home.

The accomplished Hollywood actress noticed Walter missing from the family’s yard on Thursday and then received a call from a blocked number.

“I totally knew the second I heard the guy’s voice that he was not a good guy,” she said.

O’Kelley said that’s when things went from bad to worse.

“It was like a movie. ‘I want $1,000 and I want you to post flyers that say Reward: $1,000,’” she said.

The family made flyers and contacted police who planned to send a plainclothes officer with them to a Hollywood Chevron to make the exchange when the suspect called and said he saw police.

“My husband said, ‘What are you talking about? I’m still posting the flyers that you told me to post.’ And that’s when he said, ‘You’re lying to me and I’m [expletive] keeping your dog’,” she said.

It turned out the suspect called from a 7-Eleven payphone in North Hollywood but likely had it scouted and the police car … a bad coincidence, CBS2′s Serene Branson reports.

O’Kelley feels this isn’t the first time they’ve done this but Walter is not puppy. He’s an older dog with health issues.

“I’ve had him since he was two months old and he could fit into my hand. I’ve had him longer than my children. Longer than my husband,” she said.

Walter is microchipped. The family is just asking that he be turned into a shelter or veterinary office. No questions asked.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact LAPD Hollywood detectives.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — On every other Wednesday for the past 40 years, a group of legendary old-school Hollywood comedians join together for lunch.

CBS2’s Paul Magers recently sat down with Arthur Hiller (“The Americanization Of Emily”), “Rocky” Kalish (“Too Close For Comfort”), Gary Owens (“Laugh-In”), John Rappaport (“M*A*S*H”), Matty Simmons (“Animal House”) and Ben Starr (“Diff’rent Strokes” and “Facts Of Life”) at Factor’s Famous Deli, where they reminisced about the entertainment business and dear friends.

The men’s tradition, which started as merely sandwiches and small talk, eventually turned into a documentary called “Lunch.” The film will debut at the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival June 2.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Wide-eyed and amazed visitors of the California Science Center come from all over to get an up-close and personal look at one of man’s engineering marvels: the Endeavour.

“The Endeavour ties into the explorer in all of us. People come here and they have tears in their eyes,” said Diane Perlov, Ph.D., Deputy Director for Exhibits.

The space shuttle, though, is not the only exhibit at the center which is located at 700 Exposition Park Drive.

It’s just the beginning.

There are several others, including the Ecosystem, which features a walk-through aquarium.

“It’s a place to be immersed in science to be able to have fun with these hands-on exhibits with your family and friends,” Perlov said.

The California Science Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is free. (323) SCIENCE.

[worldnow id=8894065 width=420 height=315 type=video]

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) —A Los Angeles doctor was sentenced Friday to 14 years in federal prison for bilking patients out of more than $1 million by promising them that an herbal supplement she hawked could cure late-stage cancer and other diseases.

U.S. District Judge Robert Timilin also ordered Dr. Christine Daniel to forfeit $1,277,083.

Daniel, 58, was found guilty of 11 counts, including wire fraud, tax evasion and witness tampering in September 2011.

She enticed patients to take her herbal product and charged them as much as $100,000 for a six-month treatment program that she claimed could cure cancer, diabetes and multiple sclerosis, authorities said.

Some of her patients, however, died from complications of cancer within three to six months after taking the supplement. In one case, prosecutors contend a 22-year-old woman who had a highly curable form of neck lymphoma died because she relied on Daniel’s recommendation to avoid radiation or chemotherapy treatments.

“The scope of Daniel’s fraud was breathtaking,” U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a statement after Daniel was sentenced. “Daniel robbed victims of more than money — she also stole their hopes and dreams for a cure. Daniel is responsible for a shockingly cold-hearted fraud that has brought her a richly deserved federal prison sentence.”

Prosecutors sought a 27-year prison term, while Daniel’s attorney argued that nearly six years behind bars was more appropriate.

In all, authorities believe Daniel siphoned about $1.1 million from dozens of families between 2001 and 2004.

Some patients also endured additional pain and suffering because they took the herbal tonic provided by Daniel.

At trial, experts called by federal prosecutors said chemical tests of the product showed it contained beef extract flavoring and a sunscreen preservative, among other ingredients.

“I live with the guilt that I should have seen that none of what she was going through was helping her, but instead was hurting her,” Debra Harris wrote in a letter submitted to the court about her sister Barbara Davis, who was one of Daniel’s patients and who later died. Harris said Daniel’s patients were not only convinced they could be cured, but so were family members who “wanted to believe it just as bad.”

Paula Middlebrooks also put her faith in Daniel, who billed her nearly $60,000 over a five-month period to help treat her terminal breast cancer. Eventually, Daniel pronounced Middlebrooks free of cancer and threw her a party.

“Paula believed that she was going to live. Dr. Daniel, to me, brainwashed her,” said Tammie Fleming, Middlebrooks’ sister.

In reality, the cancer was spreading.

When Middlebrooks went back to her home in Georgia, a doctor performing back surgery discovered the cancer was far from gone.

“He said…I cleaned up what I could, (but) the cancer was oozing like oatmeal,” said Fleming.

Middlebrooks died 27 days later.

Federal prosecutors said Daniel preyed upon people in their most vulnerable state.

Daniel “repeatedly demonstrated a merciless and callous indifference to the suffering of her patients and their family members,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Johns wrote in court documents. “It is unlikely that our federal criminal justice system will see the like of defendant Christine Daniel again.”

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBS/AP) — Orange County residents gathered Friday to participate in an ongoing debate about a Southern California tradition—beach bonfires.

Newport Beach wants to remove 33 fire rings near Balboa Pier and another 27 on a stretch of Corona del Mar State Beach after some residents complained of smoke and other health-related issues.

The city’s request prompted air quality regulators to propose a ban of nearly 850 bonfires along miles of coastline in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The city of Huntington Beach fears that if the South Coast Air Quality Management District approves the ban, they will lose nearly $1 million in parking revenue each year.

On Friday, the mayors of Huntington Beach and Santa Ana listened while supporters and opponents of the fire pits had their say at a meeting at Huntington Beach City Hall.

“Especially when we talk about revenue, I think it’s sad if we put revenue above the health of the children who are breathing the smoke on an ongoing basis,” said Julie Sandercock.

“Think about the people who are complaining about the fire pits in Newport. There are a small number of them. Then think about the people who use the fire pits all over California and the amount of tourists who come and use them. That’s a whole lot more, thousands more, possibly millions,” said fifth-grader Emily Fitzpatrick.

The AQMD was set to vote on the ban June 7, but the hearing was pushed back to a later date for more air quality tests.

ANAHEIM (AP) — Chris Sale stifled the Los Angeles Angels’ bats for the second time in six days, scattering three hits over 7 2-3 innings with a season-high 12 strikeouts on Friday night to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 3-0 victory.

Alex Rios and Adam Dunn homered for the White Sox, who extended their winning streak to a season-high four games.

Sale (5-2) threw 79 of his 113 pitches for strikes in another competitive duel with fellow lefty C.J. Wilson, whom he beat 3-0 last Sunday night at Chicago. In that gem, Sale retired the first 19 batters and settled for a one-hitter — Mike Trout’s one-out single in the seventh inning — while recording his first shutout in the major leagues.

Sale extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings. It was his sixth straight start of at least seven innings while allowing fewer than three earned runs — the longest such streak by a White Sox pitcher since a seven-game stretch by Mark Buehrle in 2007.

Addison Reed pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save in 15 chances.

Wilson (3-3) lost his third straight start, allowing two runs and six hits over seven innings in his longest outing of the season. It was his first home start since April 21 against Detroit, following four straight on the road.

Rios drove his 10th home run to left-center with two out in the first to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, one shy of his career best in 2006 with Toronto. Paul Konerko followed with a vicious line drive back to Wilson, who caught it before spiking the ball with his glove in frustration over the homer he surrendered on an 0-2 pitch.

Wilson gave up only three more hits until the seventh, when Dayan Viciedo singled with one out. White Sox manager Robin Ventura played hit-and run with Jeff Keppinger to stay away from a potential inning-ending double play, and Viciedo pulled into second as Keppinger grounded out to third. Conor Gillaspie followed with an RBI single.

Dunn ended the scoring with his 10th homer of the season and fourth in four games against Garrett Richards in the ninth.

NOTES: Sale’s streak of consecutive innings without a walk ended at 22 2-3 in the first when he put Trout on after getting ahead of him 0-2. … Tyler Flowers’ throwing error was Chicago’s 10th in nine games and AL-worst 31st this season, only one more than the Angels have. Last season, the White Sox led the majors with a franchise-record .988 fielding percentage. … Angels 3B Alberto Callaspo was 0 for 3 in his second career game as a DH. His other also was against the White Sox, on June 30, 2010, when he went 1 for 4 with an RBI double for Kansas City. … The White Sox are the only AL club that hasn’t scored 10 runs in a game. … Hamilton was 0 for 3 against Sale. Left-handed hitters are 3 for 52 against him this season. … Konerko was 1 for 4, making him 7 for 30 with two homers, eight RBIs and five walks in the nine games he has started in the cleanup spot. … The Angels got one hit over the final 5 2-3 innings, a single by No. 9 hitter Luis Jimenez that ended his 0-for-13 drought.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — O.J. Simpson’s former lawyer defended himself point-by-point Friday against allegations he botched the former football star’s armed-robbery trial, after giving damaging testimony that Simpson actually knew his buddies had guns when they went to a hotel room together to reclaim some sports memorabilia.

Miami-based attorney Yale Galanter quickly found himself under withering cross-examination from a Simpson lawyer intent on proving that Galanter’s word couldn’t be trusted — that he knew ahead of time of Simpson’s plan and spent more effort covering up his involvement than representing Simpson.

The week long hearing concluded late Friday with Clark County District Judge Linda Marie Bell telling attorneys she will issue her decision in writing. She didn’t specify a date.

Simpson was returned to prison custody. His attorneys, Patricia Palm and Ozzie Fumo, said they were optimistic that the judge would grant a new trial.

“I just think the evidence of his claims is overwhelming,” Palm said.

Galanter took the stand as the state’s star witness in a hearing on Simpson’s claim that he was so badly represented at trial and on appeal that his conviction should be thrown out.

He spent most of the day on the defensive, with Simpson lawyer Tom Pitaro grilling him with accusations and pointed questions.

“Mr. Simpson never told me he was going to go to the Palace (Station) hotel with a bunch of thugs, kidnap people and take property by force,” Galanter said at one point. “To insinuate I, as his lawyer, would have blessed it is insane.”

Galanter conceded at one point that Simpson’s conviction was his responsibility.

At another point, he conceded that he “misspoke” when he told the trial judge, Jackie Glass, that crucial audio recordings had been carefully analyzed by experts.

“Clearly I misspoke,” Galanter said as Pitaro bored in. “I would never, ever … I would just never intentionally mislead a judicial officer or a lawyer. I’m falling on that sword.”

Galanter denied giving Simpson the go-ahead to retrieve the photos and footballs he believed had been stolen from him. He denied keeping Simpson in the dark about offers of plea deals that carried only a few years in prison. He said his client agreed all along with the decision not to put him on the stand to testify at his trial.

And he disputed Simpson’s testimony from earlier this week when the former NFL star said he didn’t know anyone in the hotel room had guns.

“When you look at the entire trial, I don’t think I could have fought harder, done more,” Galanter said. “I put every ounce of blood, sweat and soul into it.”

At another point, he said: “Simpson brought a lot of baggage into the courtroom. It’s not like the 12 jurors didn’t know he was accused of murder and acquitted.”

Simpson, 65, was found guilty in 2008 of kidnapping and armed robbery over the hotel room episode and was sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison. The conviction came 13 years to the day after his “trial of the century” acquittal in Los Angeles in the murders of his ex-wife and a friend of hers.

Galanter testified that Simpson confided to him that he had asked two men to bring guns to the hotel room in September 2007, and “he knew he screwed up.”

On the stand, Galanter brought up the guns only after he paused and was reminded that Simpson had waived attorney-client privilege. “I’m very uncomfortable doing this,” he said.

Testifying about events leading up to the incident, Galanter said he was surprised when Simpson told him over dinner in Las Vegas that he and several other men were planning a “sting” the next morning to take back the mementos.

Galanter said he advised Simpson not to take matters into his own hands: “I said, ‘O.J., you’ve got to call the police.’”

Simpson testified that Galanter advised him that he was within his rights to retrieve the items, told him not to testify at the trial, and failed to tell him prosecutors had offered plea bargains.

During questioning about how much Galanter was paid for the case, the judge asked Pitaro where he was going with his questions.

“What Mr. Galanter has done is, this man has received over a half-million dollars and has put his interest, his financial interest, above the interest of his client,” Pitaro said.

Galanter insisted he told Simpson at least three times that prosecutors discussed plea bargains. He said Simpson rejected them.

Simpson said, “No deal. No way,” to an offer from the district attorney of five to seven years in prison, Galanter said. Later, during the trial, Simpson turned down a better offer, Galanter said.

“I went out in the hall and said to O.J., ‘There is an offer of two to five.’ He said, ‘See if they will take a year,’” Galanter testified. “I discussed a year with them, and they said no and the trial went on.”

If Simpson succeeds in getting his conviction thrown out, prosecutors will have to decide whether to retry him or offer a plea bargain. If he loses, he will be sent back to prison and will probably appeal. He will be 70 before he is eligible for parole.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Attorney General Kamala Harris met with a new statewide taskforce of district attorneys Friday to study ways to reduce gun violence and enforce existing law.

Harris discussed the task force at a news conference after her first two-hour meeting with 11 district attorneys and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck.

She said the Gun Violence Leadership panel had come together to address “one of the most pressing issues the state faces in terms of public safety.” She pointed to a nearby table of weapons seized from people she said should not own weapons because of mental health issues or their criminal history.

“We have to be practical and recognize that no one wants guns to be in the hands of people who are legally prohibited from owning or possessing them,” Harris said. “It is a false choice to suggest that one is either in favor of the Second Amendment or in favor of reasonable gun safety rules. We can be both.”

State officials have identified 20,000 people who have purchased a handgun or registered an assault weapon but have since become prohibited from possessing one.

Harris said she hoped to work with the district attorneys to reduce that number over the next three years. A program that funds law enforcement’s efforts to seize those guns recently received an infusion of $24 million from state Legislature.

Officials said there are more than 120 laws on California’s books addressing gun violence. On Friday, district attorneys reviewed those laws and shared ideas on how counties can target the issue.

It’s unclear how often the group will meet, though Harris said meetings will occur as needed.

CANYON COUNTRY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities are on the hunt for a man they claim shot his father to death in Canyon Country Thursday night.

The incident happened around 11:50 p.m. in the 1900 block of Newhouse Street.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives said Juan Alexander Dubon, 31, arrived home drunk and started to argue with his parents.

He then reportedly shot his father, Juan Mejia, in the head.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The suspect fled the house.

In Spanish, Mejia’s brother-in-law told KCAL9’s Suraya Fadel that he doesn’t understand why his nephew killed his father.

He said the two men always got along.

He also told Fadel that Mejia, a native of El Salvador, was a good man with a big heart.

Dubon, who is considered armed and dangerous, is described as Guatemalan, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 117 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts was asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500 or 911 in case of an emergency.

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — Firefighters Friday were gaining ground on a fast-moving brush fire burning in Castaic.

The fire near the southbound 5 Freeway and Lake Hughes Road broke out around 1:22 p.m.

The fire quickly grew in intensity, prompting the evacuation of 19 homes on Elk Ridge Road and Vista Point Place.

Those residents were allowed to return home by 4:38 p.m.

Ground crews were assisted by a coordinated air support as the blaze scorched 575 acres, authorities said.

As of 8 p.m., the fire was 60 percent contained.

The fire had also prompted the closure of at least one lane of the southbound 5 Freeway just north of Lake Hughes Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Nearby Northlake Hills Elementary School, which has approximately 625 students kindergarten through fifth grade, had been placed on lockdown. The students were eventually allowed to leave the premise.

A spark from a vehicle is being blamed for causing the blaze.

ATLANTA (AP) — Justin Upton was still the main man for Atlanta, even when the Braves finally had all their sluggers together.

Upton gave Atlanta the lead with a sixth-inning grand slam and the Braves finally unveiled their full-strength lineup, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5 on Friday night.

Upton drove in five runs hitting behind Jason Heyward, who had two hits with a RBI and scored two runs in his first game back after having his appendix removed April 22.

The homer was Upton’s majors-leading 14th of the season, a high shot that appeared bound for the upper deck before landing deep in the left-field seats.

“I got that one pretty good,” he said.

Just pretty good?

“As soon as he took that swing, I knew that ball was going to be out of the ballpark,” said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. “That was one of the prettiest swings I’ve seen put on a baseball.”

It was the first time this season the Braves had Heyward in the lineup along with catcher Brian McCann, who missed the first 30 games while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Atlanta also had first baseman Freddie Freeman miss two weeks in April with a strained oblique.

“We’ve played 40 games and it’s the first time we’ve had the lineup we talked about all winter,” Gonzalez said before the game.

Scott Van Slyke hit two homers for the Dodgers, who led 4-2 before Upton’s third career grand slam. Los Angeles had won four of its previous five games — the team’s best stretch since early April.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was disappointed by his pitching staff’s seven walks and errors by third baseman Luis Cruz and left fielder Carl Crawford — each on line drives hit by Andrelton Simmons — that led to three unearned runs.

“Too many walks. Giving too many free runners,” Mattingly said. “And we’ve got to catch the baseball. That’s all there is to it. You’ve got to catch the baseball.”

Paul Maholm (5-4) allowed eight hits and four runs — two earned — in six innings, and Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 12th save.

Upton’s grand slam made Maholm a winner.

“I’ll take it every time I start,” said Maholm of Upton’s big homer. “I’ll have to make sure I compensate Justin pretty well for that.”

Dodgers rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu overcame a career-high five walks to give up only two runs in five innings, but relievers Matt Guerrier and Poco Rodriguez (0-2) quickly blew the 4-2 lead in the sixth.

After Guerrier gave up a single to pinch-hitter Jordan Schafer, Cruz couldn’t handle Simmons’ sharp liner, an error that left runners on first and second. Rodriguez walked Heyward to load the bases before Upton’s homer deep into the left-field seats.

Crawford missed Simmons’ line drive for another error during Atlanta’s two-run seventh. Ramiro Pena, who hit a two-out triple, scored on the error and Heyward added a run-scoring single off Ronald Belisario.

Ryu failed to last at least six innings for the first time in nine starts. He gave up five hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

“All day today I was just a little off-balance,” Ryu said through an interpreter. “I personally feel bad that I couldn’t go longer as a starter. I feel bad for my teammates that I couldn’t stay out there a little longer. … Unfortunately my balls weren’t going in the zone today.”

A.J. Ellis doubled and scored on Dee Gordon’s fielder’s choice grounder for the Dodgers in the second. Crawford and Ryu had run-scoring singles in the fourth.

Ryu had strong defensive support in the fifth. Van Slyke, making his first start of the season in right field, had a sliding catch of Chris Johnson’s fly ball near the foul line. Matt Kemp then made a diving grab of McCann’s fly ball in the left-center gap.

Mattingly said he didn’t second-guess his decision to replace Ryu, who needed 100 pitches to make it through five innings.

“I feel fine with it,” Mattingly said. “He was done. He was at 100 and he struggled the whole day. That wasn’t a decision. It wasn’t a tough one to make. At 100, he’s pretty much out of gas.”

Slumping Braves center fielder B.J. Upton was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, dropping his batting average to .141 as he hit eighth for the first time this season. He drew scattered boos when he popped out to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in the second inning and an even louder serenade when his bases-loaded popup to Punto at second base ended the third inning.

Kemp, who grounded out to end the game, was 0-for-5, ending his 14-game hitting streak, which began on April 30.

NOTES: Braves Hall of Famer Hank Aaron attended batting practice. … Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalyn, watched the game from their usual seats near the Braves dugout. … Dodgers INF Jerry Hairston Jr., on the 15-day DL with a left groin strain, was examined by a doctor in Arizona on Friday for a sore left knee. Mattingly called the problem “a little bit of a setback.” … RHP Jordan Walden was placed on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation to clear a spot for Heyward. … Braves RHP Kris Medlen and Dodgers LHP Chris Capuano each will look for his second win as the series continues on Saturday night. Medlen is only 1-5 but has a 3.44 ERA.

[worldnow id=8893030 width=420 height=315 type=video]

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — As the mayoral race draws near, both campaigns are heavily courting the Latino voter with Spanish-speaking TV ads.

KCAL9′s Dave Lopez says the Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel campaigns are focused on getting voters to the polls with the election Tuesday.

“There is no place, inside or outside, any campaign for the sort of attacks we’ve both withstood.” said Garcetti.

“Anyone who is doing independent expenditure, I do not want you to have negative ads — if Mr. Garcetti agrees to do that. I extended my hand. He did not take that handshake. He did not agree to it,” said Greuel.

On the campaign trail Friday, the candidates wanted to focus on other issues.

Garcetti wanted to make headlines with the fact that ten current and former city council members were endorsing him.

Greuel, standing in front of a vacant building in Hollywood said, in her opinion, the “eyesore” was Garcetti’s fault.

But Lopez reports, two Spanish-speaking ads, paid for by people not officially affiliated with either candidate, was what everyone was talking about today.

The ads, paid for by PAC money, are raising eyebrows.

LA’s current mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, who has remained neutral in the Garcetti-Greuel contest, doesn’t like the ads of the PAC money paying for them. “I am offended by it. We should all be offended,” said Villaraigosa.

One of the attack ads says Greuel was a Republican and anti-immigrant. The other ad says Garcetti is a strong backer of Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his controversial views on deporting immigrants.

“I just asked to shake Eric Garcetti’s hand and he wouldn’t,” said Dr. Feliciano Serrano, the man who paid for the anti-Garcetti ads.

Lopez asked him if the ad was fair. “It sticks to the facts,” said Dr. Serrano.

Regarding the ad and Dr. Serrano’s buying ad time, Greuel said, “I cannot communicate with him. But I have said publicly, and I will say again, I want the negative ads taken down.”

The man who is running the anti-Greuel ad said he would not take it down.

Garcetti said, “You should talk to him.” Lopez asks, “Have you tried to?” Garcetti then replied, “No, I’ve made my statement clear. I did it early and proactively.”

The man who paid for the anti-Greuel ad, Rick Jacobs, said through a spokesperson that he wasn’t going to put the ad because it was “factual.” He also said a phone call from the mayor will not sway him.

“I’ve asked him to take it off the air. I did it yesterday. I asked both campaigns. I understand that he hasn’t,” said Villaraigosa.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ken Venturi, who overcame dehydration to win the 1964 U.S. Open and spent 35 years in the booth for CBS Sports, died Friday afternoon. He was 82.

His son, Matt Venturi, said he died in a hospital in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Venturi had been hospitalized the last two months for a spinal infection, pneumonia, and then an intestinal infection that he could no longer fight.

Venturi died 12 days after he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

He couldn’t make it to the induction. His sons, Matt and Tim, accepted on his behalf after an emotional tribute by Jim Nantz, who worked alongside Venturi at CBS.

“When dad did receive the election into the Hall of Fame, he had a twinkle in his eye, and that twinkle is there every day,” Tim Venturi said that night.

Venturi was all about overcoming the odds.

A prominent amateur who grew up in San Francisco, he captured his only major in the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional, the last year the final round was 36 holes. In oppressive heat, Venturi showed signs of dehydration and a doctor recommended he stop playing because it could be fatal. Venturi pressed on to the finish, closed with a 70 and was heard to say, “My God, I’ve won the U.S. Open.”

He had a severe stuttering problem as a child, yet went on to become one of the familiar voices in golf broadcasting. He began working for CBS in 1968 and lasted 35 years.

“We all knew what a wonderful player Ken Venturi was, and how he fashioned a second successful career as an announcer,” Jack Nicklaus said. “But far more important than how good he was at playing the game or covering it, Ken was my friend. Ken was fortunate in that the game of golf gave him so much, but without question, Ken gave back far more to the game he loved than he ever gained from it. Over the years, Ken developed a circle of friends that is enormous and whose collective heart is heavy today.”

Venturi played on one Ryder Cup team and was U.S. captain in the 2000 Presidents Cup.

As an amateur, he was the 54-hole leader in the 1956 Masters until closing with an 80, and he was runner-up at Augusta National in 1960 to Arnold Palmer, who birdied the last two holes.

Venturi was born May 15, 1931, in San Francisco, and he developed his game at Harding Park Golf Course. He won the California State Amateur at Pebble Beach in 1951 and 1956, while serving in the Army in Korea between those two amateur titles.

His stammering problem is what led him to golf.

“When I was 13 years old, the teacher told my mother, ‘I’m sorry, Mrs. Venturi, but your son will never be able to speak. He’s an incurable stammerer,’” Venturi said in 2011. “My mother asked me what I planned to do. I said, ‘I’m taking up the loneliest sport I know,’ and picked up a set of hickory shaft across the street from a man and went to Harding Park and played my first round of golf.”

He turned pro after his close call in the 1956 Masters, and won his first PGA Tour at the St. Paul Open Invitational. Venturi won eight times over the next three years, including the Los Angeles Open and the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, before injuries started to affect his game after nearly winning the 1960 Masters.

He hurt his back in 1961 and badly injured his wrist in a car accident the next year. He missed the U.S. Open three straight years until he narrowly qualified for Congressional. It turned out to be an epic final day for the Californian coping with broiling heat.

Venturi shot 66 in the third round, but was feeling weak during the break before the final round that afternoon. John Everett, a doctor and member at Congressional, checked on him and found a normal pulse but symptoms of dehydration.

“Dr. Everett told me … I was lying next to my locker and he says, ‘I suggest that you don’t go out. It could be fatal,’” Venturi said in 2011 when he returned to Congressional for the U.S. Open. “I looked up at him and I said, ‘Well, it’s better than the way I’ve been living.’ And I got off the floor, and I do not remember walking to the first tee. I don’t remember the front nine until I started coming into it.”

Venturi was so shaken, so weak, when it was over that his final act was to sign the scorecard. He couldn’t even read the numbers. Joe Dey, the executive director of the USGA, looked over his shoulder, checked the scores and told him to sign it.

Sports Illustrated honored him as its “Sportsman of the Year” in 1964.

Venturi won three more times, his last win coming in 1966 at the Lucky International at Harding Park, where it all started.

He eventually developed Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in his hands and was forced to retire. That’s when he moved into the booth as the lead analyst for CBS Sports, and his voice filled living rooms for the next 35 years until he retired in 2002.

Venturi was elected to the Hall of Fame through the Lifetime Achievement category.

“If there is some sense of fairness, it is that Ken was inducted into a Hall of Fame that he very much deserved to be in and, in fact, should have been in for many years,” Nicklaus said. “While I know he was not able to be there in person for his induction, I am certain there was an overwhelming sense of pride and peace that embraced Ken. It was a dream of Ken Venturi’s that became a reality before he sadly left us.”

Venturi is survived his wife of 10 years, Kathleen, and his two sons. Matt Venturi said services were pending.

[worldnow id=8893138 width=420 height=315 type=video]

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The campaign for Los Angeles city controller has heated up days before the May 21 runoff election.

CBS2’s Andrea Fujii reported that Dennis Zine has a 15-point lead against opponent Ron Galperin, according to a recent Cal State L.A. poll.

Nearly half of those questioned were still undecided, however.

Galperin and Zine said the city controller race may not be the most publicized, but it’s for one of the most important positions in the city.

“It’s the job of the controller to make sure our money is not being wasted,” said Galperin.

“It’s a person who is watching out for the taxpayer,” said Zine.

Fujii said some people describe the candidates as an “insider” versus an “outsider.”

Galperin, the self-proclaimed outsider, won the primary by about 4,000 votes.

He’s been an attorney in Los Angeles for 20 years and sits on two volunteer city financial commissions.

Galperin said the fact that he’s never been elected to political office helps his chances.

“I haven’t been entrenched in city government and I don’t owe anything to anybody,” he said.

Zine is a three-term city councilmember representing the west San Fernando Valley and a 33-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department.

He said there’s nothing wrong with being an insider.

“I know how the system works. I know where to go to make sure we can make changes and improvements,” said Zine.

Both men said if elected, they’ll get rid of wasteful spending and irresponsible money management.

A recent report found the city had been sitting on nearly $43 million in a special transportation fund.

Zine said, “That will not happen under my watch. I will make sure we have red flags in place in every single department.”

Galperin said, “It should never have happened in the first place. If you have a centralized system for it, you can track it. It’s not brain surgery.”

In the candidates’ final debate, the two men tried to differentiate themselves.

Galperin said the way the city collects money must be changed, but Zine claims Galperin’s promises are unrealistic.

In a YouTube ad, Galperin said, “I’ve identified more than $450 million the city can be saving and generating each year.”

Zine said, “There’s not hundreds of millions of dollars outstanding that hasn’t been collected.”

“There’s a lot of money on the books now that’s not collectible, but we can change that process moving forward,” responded Galperin.

Both candidates said on day one as city controller, they’ll hit the ground running.

Zine said, “We will go after those departments that aren’t performing to the maximum efficiency for the people of Los Angeles. “

“What’s really important is to make sure good audits get done. That will be my priority,” said Galperin.

[worldnow id=8894038 width=420 height=315 type=video]

MODJESKA CANYON (CBSLA.com) — A body found in an unincorporated area of the Santa Ana Mountains has been positively identified as missing Cal State Fullerton student Maribel Ramos.

“After an autopsy earlier today, the body that was found yesterday was identified as that of Maribel Ramos,” Lt. Dave Hill of the Orange Police Department said. “Her case has therefore been reclassified from a missing person’s case to a homicide investigation.”

Hill said that Ramos’ former roommate, 54-year-old KC Joy, has been arrested on suspicion of her murder and booked into Orange County jail.

Ramos’ was found in brush off Santiago Canyon Road on the hillside of Modjeska Canyon. The remains were so badly deteriorated, law enforcement officials were unable to determine whether it was a man or woman.

Ramos, who has served two tours of duty in Iraq, was last seen in her apartment on May 2. She was scheduled to graduate at the end of May with a criminal justice degree from Cal State Fullerton. Her family and friends, including Joy, said that her disappearance was very out of character for the former Army veteran.

In a previous interview, Joy said he last saw Ramos at their apartment in Orange. He admitted they “had words,” but nothing out of the ordinary. He said he grew concerned when he didn’t see her Friday morning.

KC Joy. (credit: CBS)

“Oh, she left voluntarily, nobody is gonna drag her out. She’s a very stubborn woman, she has a very strong head on her shoulders. Nobody someone can…she had to, someone had to come pick her up,” Joy said.

When police searched the apartment, Joy said officers took his cell phone and her laptop. He also said he consented to a full body search and voluntarily gave his DNA as part of the investigation.

KCAL9′s Stacey Butler spoke to neighbors Friday evening who describe Joy now as “a loner” and “a man in crisis.”

Joy had recently lost his job and totaled his car. Ramos reportedly told him he was also going to have to leave the apartment.

A neighbor told Butler that the day Ramos went missing, Joy began exhibiting bizarre behavior. He said, “[Joy] wanted to make a missing persons report 10:30 the morning she went missing. I thought if she was on a date, why would you want to file a missing persons report, at 10:30 in the morning.”

The neighbor added, for the four hours police were at the apartment investigating Joy was nowhere to be found. “Tried to call him, he wasn’t answering. He just popped back up out of nowhere. He said he was in a car in front of the apartment the whole time.

The neighbor added that he noticed deep scratches on both of Joy’s arms three days after she went missing. “He claimed he was walking the dog and fell over into some bushes.”

[worldnow id=8894063 width=420 height=315 type=video]

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The jackpot for Saturday’s Powerball draw is at $600 million, a record for that game.

Lottery officials say the number could climb even higher.

KCAL9′s Rob Schmitt reported from Blue Bird Liquors in Hawthorne, a “packed” store that has sold many winning lottery tickets in the past.

He said there were more than 100 people on line and the line was going out the store and down the block.

Schmitt said he spoke to one woman who missed her dialysis appointment to buy her tickets.

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Powerball starts at $40 million. The previous record jackpot reached $588 million in November 2012.

The record jackpot of all US-based lottery games, for now, is the $656 Mega Millions jackpot reached in March 2012.

The current Mega Millions jackpot (drawing is Friday evening) is at $190 million.

[UPDATE: Two tickets matched all six numbers in Friday's draw. The winner Mega Millions numbers are 11, 15, 35, 43, 49 and the Mega number is 41. The winners were sold in New Jersey and Virginia. California had no 5/5 winners.)

[worldnow id=8893172 width=420 height=315 type=video]

AGOURA HILLS (CBSLA.com) —Detectives confirmed Friday that the boys’ varsity basketball team was questioned in connection to racist graffiti targeting black students at Agoura High School.

The remarks, which included “Go back 2 Africa,” were first spotted on school walls over the weekend.

On Wednesday, the names of five black students who would be the “first to die” were written on a bathroom wall.

At least one source told KCAL9’s Amy Johnson that a basketball player scrawled the hateful words in an effort to get a transfer, so he could play for another school.

The freshman/sophomore basketball team, who weren’t questioned, said the situation has hurt their reputation.

“It makes us look like we’re a joke or something like that,” said Reece Chodorow. “Like people want to get out of our school.”

“It brings a bad reputation to our school because of all the negative attention we’re getting now,” said Sean Chism.

Senior Dylan Zimmerman said he’s heard different rumors around campus about the culprit.

“The rumor I’ve been hearing is that it’s an African American,” he said.

Principal Larry Miser said Thursday that he didn’t believe the incident was racially motivated.

“Based on all the information we have right now, based on the threat assessment by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and our own belief of knowing our student body and our community, our school is absolutely safe. We believe that once it comes out you’ll see it’s not a racial thing,” said Miser.

Officials are expected to make an announcement about the case on Monday.

Last year, Vitello’s of Studio City went through a complete facelift, and rightly so. Vitello’s had been plagued with the memory of murder for over a decade when Robert Blake’s wife was shot to death outside the restaurant.

Gone are the dark days! Vitello’s gutted the inside and opened it up for a great indoor/outdoor vibe perfect for late spring, early summer days. Enjoy jazz upstairs and now downstairs on select nights, plus great specials like ½ off wine bottles on Monday, and Wednesday Wine Tastings for $30 which includes appetizers.

The dinner menu has something for everyone, from classic dishes like Lasagna served in the perfect proportion – no big sloppy mess here – to hit-the-spot appetizers like fresh Burrata Caprese and bite-size Eggplant Parmesan Rollatini. If you opt for a fish dish, I highly recommend the Branzino. With a crispy skin on the bottom, almond crusting on top, all over a bed of zucchini tossed with Sicilian pesto, this light dish will actually fill you up.

If you were hoping to sit in the booth where ex-murder suspect Blake ate with his wife that fateful night in 2001, sorry to say the booth was removed to rid the place of bad energy. It was reportedly going on eBay for $1000.

EL SEGUNDO (AP) — Anze Kopitar won’t allow a puck to the face to keep him out of the Los Angeles Kings’ title defense.

Kopitar returned to practice at the Kings’ training complex on Friday, and he’s ready to play in Game 3 on Saturday night at the Shark Tank after surviving a scary moment in the third period of Game 2 against the San Jose Sharks.

Kopitar missed only a few minutes of the Kings’ 4-3 victory Thursday night after a shot by teammate Dustin Brown hit him in the left side of his face above his upper lip.

“I’ve felt better before, but I guess when you come out of the situation with a couple of stitches, it’s not too bad,” Kopitar said before the Kings’ flight to San Jose. “I wanted to make sure it’s nothing serious. As soon as I found out, I wanted to come back. It’s really a no-brainer.”

Brown’s shot caught Kopitar squarely in the face, and a hush fell over Staples Center as he went down in a heap and finally skated off with a towel on his face. After getting roughly 20 stitches in the dressing room, Kopitar returned later in the period to the strains of the “Rocky” theme song.

Los Angeles trailed 3-2 with less than two minutes to play — and while Kopitar would never suggest he inspired one of the most amazing comebacks in Kings history, the Slovenian center was on the ice when the Kings scored the first of two late power-play goals in 22 seconds to steal Game 2 from the Sharks.

“I heard the (crowd) got a little bit louder,” Kopitar said. “Just shows how passionate they are. It’s nice to know they’re always behind us.”

The Kings’ leading scorer and top center is sporting a nasty, jagged cut on his face, but it’s nothing hockey players haven’t seen before.

“There goes the modeling career,” coach Darryl Sutter deadpanned. “Best-looking Slovenian athlete. Hockey players are different than other athletes. Get hit in the face, and they get cut, and they get sewed up and they come back out and play. Very seldom in 30-some years seen a player that doesn’t do that. Spit your teeth in your hand. It’s good, coach.”

This isn’t the first time this season Brown has injured Kopitar, either: The captain accidentally hit his linemate in the face with his stick during a home game earlier this season.

Kopitar was the Kings’ leading scorer for the sixth consecutive regular season, scoring 42 points in 47 games. The Slovenian center has just one goal and three assists in eight playoff games, only ending a personal 19-game goal drought in Game 4 of the first round against St. Louis.

But the Kings are excelling again in the postseason without eye-popping numbers from Kopitar. The reigning Stanley Cup champions lead San Jose 2-0 in the series despite getting outplayed for long stretches.

Sleeping was another challenge for Kopitar with his swollen, sutured face, but he figured it out.

“I just wanted to make sure I was always on my right side or on my back,” Kopitar said. “I didn’t want to roll over to the left, but I got a good night’s sleep.”

The rest of the Kings’ roster also appears to be improving. Forward Kyle Clifford was in practice with the Kings’ regulars Friday after missing the past three playoff games with an undisclosed injury.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown is defending his proposal to shift some education spending to the state’s neediest children.

With a proposed jump in school spending this year, Brown wants to target new dollars at districts with students who are low-income, English-learners or foster children.

But some lawmakers see the proposal as a money grab from suburban and more affluent districts.

Brown told reporters at a school in an unincorporated neighborhood east of Los Angeles on Friday that his plan would give the state the “biggest bang for our buck.”

He says it makes sense to send more money to schools where there is the most need.

Brown’s budget would push per-pupil funding in California to an average of nearly $8,500 for the remainder of the current school year.

OAKLAND (CBS / AP) – The San Antonio Spurs held off a furious final rally to beat the Golden State Warriors 94-82 in Game 6 on Thursday night and advance to the Western Conference finals.

Tim Duncan had 19 points and six rebounds, Kawhi Leonard scored 16 points and the Spurs won the series in six games.

Tony Parker shook off a poor start to score 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. Tiago Splitter added a career-playoff high 14 points for San Antonio, which led by 13 late in the third quarter.

Stephen Curry shot 10 of 25 from the floor to score 22 points on a nagging left ankle. Jarrett Jack had 15 points as the injury-saddled Warriors wore down. The Spurs outshot Golden State 45 percent to 39 percent.

[worldnow id=8889366 width=480 height=360 type=video]

Second-seeded San Antonio will open the conference finals at home against Memphis on Sunday. The fifth-seeded Grizzlies eliminated Oklahoma City in five games.

The Spurs became the first team to win consecutive games in the series and hand the Warriors consecutive losses in the playoffs—and they did it at just the right time.

The Spurs quieted a standing-room-only crowd late in the third quarter and seemingly seized control for good. Instead, the Warriors roared back.

Klay Thompson, who had 10 points on 4-for-12 shooting, made a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter that sliced San Antonio’s lead to three. And Curry’s pull-up jumper brought the Warriors within 77-75 with 4:52 to play.

Parker was 1 for 13 before hitting a corner 3-pointer to give San Antonio an 80-75 lead. Leonard followed with two free throws to put the Spurs up seven.

Jack made a jumper and two free throws to bring the Warriors back again. Then Leonard hit another corner 3-pointer for the Spurs to go ahead 85-79.

Curry and Thompson had consecutive 3s rim out on the same possession. Parker hit another 3-pointer to put San Antonio up 88-79 with 1:15 remaining and send some of the yellow-shirted crowd of 19,596 heading to the exits.

Fans serenaded the home team with chants of “Warr-i-ors!” in the final seconds. Curry also grabbed the microphone after the game and thanked fans at half court, breaking the huddle with the crowd, “Just us!”

The Spurs showed incredible ball movement all game and had the Warriors playing from behind most of the way. San Antonio’s first 10 field goals came on an assist, going ahead by 10 points twice in the second quarter and maintaining that cushion until late.

Golden State stayed close despite more injury setbacks in a season full of them. Andrew Bogut walked gingerly to the locker room with 8:31 remaining in the second quarter to get his troublesome left ankle re-tapped. Upstart rookie Harrison Barnes fell awkwardly while leaping to contest a layup in the second quarter from Boris Diaw.

Barnes hit the court hard and his teammates immediately called for the training staff to attend to him as the arena fell silent. He received six stitches above his right eye at halftime and ran on the court late to start the third quarter, bringing fans to their feet roaring once more.

At least for a moment.

Barnes left the game in the fourth quarter because of a headache, the team said. He finished with nine points and four rebounds in 31 minutes.

The steady Spurs kept making the Warriors work for every shot and grinding out points on the other end. San Antonio took a 61-48 lead late in the third quarter before Golden State started its final surge.

The Spurs made sure it wasn’t enough.

NOTES: NBA Commissioner David Stern, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and prospective Kings owner Vivek Ranadive attended the game. … The Spurs are 10-1 in closeout games since the start of the 2007 playoffs. … Parker’s worst shooting performance in the playoffs with more than five shot attempts came when he was 1 of 12 against New Jersey in the 2003 NBA Finals won by the Spurs. … The Warriors fell to 4-1 after a loss in the playoffs.

Reviewed by Farah Ahmed, MD

May 10, 2013 — Taking antibiotics could relieve symptoms of chronic lower back pain for up to 40% of people, according to a new study.

Danish researchers say they’ve found a link between many cases of back pain and infection from bacteria.

Some experts have questioned how many people are likely to benefit from this treatment. Others have cautioned that boosting antibiotic use in the face of growing resistance could be counterproductive and lead to more superbugs.

Widespread Complaint

Back pain is a common condition, affecting about 4 out of 5 people at some point in their lives.

Recommended treatments include painkillers, hot or cold compresses, lifestyle changes, physical therapy, and keeping active. In extreme cases, when other treatments have failed, surgery may be carried out to remove part of a damaged disc.

Bacterial Infection

The latest studies from the University of Southern Denmark build on previous research, which shows that between 7% and 53% of patients with herniated discs have a type of bacteria. In these patients the bacteria entered the disc at the time it was herniated, or “slipped.”

In the first study of 61 patients who had spinal surgery for lower back pain, the researchers found bacteria in 46% of the slipped discs.

In a second study, the research team recruited 162 patients who had been living with low back pain for more than 6 months following a slipped disc. Half of the patients were given a 100-day course of antibiotic treatment, while the others received a placebo.

After a 1-year follow-up period, those who’d taken antibiotics were less likely to still have lower back pain and physical disability. They were also less likely to have leg pain and to have taken days off work because of their back.

The researchers estimate that about 35% to 40% of people with long-term back pain have excess fluid in the spinal vertebrae and might benefit from this type of treatment.

The findings are published in the European Spine Journal.

‘Not a Cure’

Media reports that antibiotics could be a cure for back pain have alarmed John O’Dowd, a consultant spinal surgeon and president of the British Society for Back Pain Research.

“Unless you’ve had a disc herniation … I don’t think you should be getting too excited, and I don’t think this is going to be a treatment for you,” O’Dowd says. ”I think this is another useful building block of evidence, but I don’t think it’s either a cure or the answer to back pain.”

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The easiest part of the playoff schedule for the Miami Heat is behind them and now the real test begins as the team awaits either the Indiana Pacers or the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Miami survived a feisty Chicago Bulls team in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Friday night. Chicago was missing its top three players, Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich, and Derrick Rose, and still took Miami to the final buzzer in Game 5.

While Miami had a commanding 3-1 lead heading into Game 5, Heat fans were concerned with the condition of guard Dwyane Wade’s right knee. Wade has battled a knee problem throughout the playoffs and at times it’s forced him to completely change his game, but never to the detriment of the team.

During Game 5, Wade went into the locker room to have his knee re-wrapped heading into the fourth quarter. When he re-entered the game, he helped the Heat push ahead of the Bulls for the rest of the game.

Wade scored six points in the fourth quarter and in 45 seconds had a blocked shot, defensive rebound, offensive rebound, and a massive putback dunk that had the crowd of the AmericanAirlines Arena rocking.

“Dwyane is uncanny,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “When the competition is at its highest, and its fiercest, he finds a way.”

“I’ll go on and on about how great he is,” Heat superstar LeBron James said. “I really don’t care for the trash talk that he receives.”

The Heat shut down center Joakim Noah in Game 5, limiting him to three points and nine rebounds. But, the Bulls did manage to get Carlos Boozer free for 26 points and 14 rebounds and Nate Robinson had 21 points, but needed 15 shots to get there.

Miami had another solid effort from the entire roster with LeBron, Udonis Haslem, Wade, and Chris Bosh all scoring in double-figures. Mario Chalmers added six points while Shane Battier added 9 points and Chris Andersen had six points in the victory.

Through nine playoff games, Miami is tops in points allowed per game at just 84.7. The Heat’s defense is only allowing teams to hit 29.8 percent of its three-point shots and just 40.9 percent of their overall shots, both of which are best in the league. Miami is also forcing 16 turnovers per game.

On the flip side, Miami is leading the league in field goal percentage at 49.1 percent in the playoffs and is sixth overall during the playoffs in points per game at 98.6.

Miami will open the East finals at home next week. If Indiana beats New York on Thursday — the Pacers lead that series 3-1 — then the Heat and Pacers will meet in Game 1 in Miami on Monday. If the Knicks extend the Pacers to at least six games, then the East finals open Wednesday, regardless of opponent.

“It only gets more difficult and more challenging,” Spoelstra said.

Miami has just one victory over each team this season and lost the season series to both the Knicks and the Pacers. But, that was outside of the playoffs and Miami will be able to rest Wade’s knee until Monday at the earliest.

[worldnow id=8891550 width=420 height=315 type=video]

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Caitlin Ryan, the 15-year-old “Titanium Princess”, stopped by KCAL9 on Friday to discuss her experience with juvenile arthritis and help others learn how to get involved in the search for a cure.

At age 3, Caitlin Ryan was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own joints.

At first they thought the 3-year-old had the flu because she suffered from a stiff neck, high fever and a swollen knee, her mother Colleen said. But as time went on, her pain increased and she had difficulty with basic tasks, like picking up a pencil or going to the playground at school.

Her mother said she had pain and difficulty moving, and experienced sleepless nights and absences from school.

Now 15, Caitlin has had two hip replacements, earning her the nickname “Titanium Princess”.

Her mother says the surgeries, together with medication, have made an enormous difference. Despite some continued pain, Caitlin attends high school. During the summer, she goes to camp for kids with arthritis.

This year Caitlin will be taking dance in high school. She stays active with yoga and swimming.

In addition to representing the Arthritis Foundation in California, Caitlin went to Washington D.C. with her mother to meet with members of Congress and advocate for more funding for research to find a cure for arthritis.

This year will mark the 10th anniversary of Caitlin’s Princess Parade, which is the walking team she formed when she was 5. Together with family and friends, the group has raised more than $300,000 for the Arthritis Foundation.

There is a 1-mile or 3-mile option, and the event is non-competitive.

The 2013 Arthritis Walks kick off this weekend in the greater Los Angeles area:

Sunday, May 19th, 9:00 a.m., Orange County, campus of UC Irvine

Sunday, May 19th, 9:00 a.m., Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia

Saturday, June 1st, Corona, Inland Empire

Sunday, June 2nd, 9:00 a.m., next to the Santa Monica Pier

May 8, 2013 — Now that the federal government is building health insurance Marketplaces (also called Exchanges) in 34 states, the question is: Will customers come?

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the government division overseeing the roll out of the new Marketplaces, is getting ready. It recently announced that thousands of people will be hired to staff call centers tied to the Marketplaces.

Beginning in June, 7,000 to 9,000 additional people will answer phones through CMS’s “1-800-Medicare” help line, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The staff will answer questions about how to apply and enroll in the new insurance plans that will be offered in the states where the federal government is partially or wholly running the Exchange.

Under the Affordable Care Act, on Oct. 1, 2013, people and small businesses will be able to purchase insurance through a Marketplace. Officials hope it will be as easy to operate as web-based travel shopping sites like Travelocity. In the Exchange, people can look for different insurance options and decide the type of plan they would like to buy. They will also learn if they qualify for tax credits to help pay for insurance or for Medicaid, the health insurance program for people with low incomes. Insurance coverage is set to begin in 2014.

Educating people and small businesses on what insurance to buy may be a big challenge, given that many people still don’t know there is an option to buy health insurance. An April Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 42% of the public didn’t know the Affordable Care Act had become law. Among that group, 19% thought it had been struck down by the Supreme Court or repealed by Congress.

Of those people with incomes of $40,000 or less — those most likely to benefit from the law — about 56% said they didn’t have enough information to know how the law would impact their families.

CMS has been spending money to make the public more aware, including $28.2 million on the call centers. The funding was awarded to Alexandria, Va.-based Vangent (a unit of defense contracting firm General Dynamics), which has been operating the “1-800-Medicare” call centers for about a decade.

Those centers help people with Medicare with questions about billing, claims, medical records, and expenses. They also help them get Medicare Advantage, the program that provides Medicare coverage through private insurers. This contract builds on the work that Vangent has already been doing for CMS.

“The people who will be answering the phones will be thoroughly educated and well-trained,” says Mark Meudt, vice president of marketing and communications at General Dynamics’ Information Technology division.

He says because Vangent has been working with CMS for so long, “we are efficient in staffing up” and expect to have employees in place by June.

Staff will provide services for people with hearing impairments as well as services in Spanish and English. There will also be a separate line to support 150 different languages.

Information will be available by telephone, email, or fax, and there will be a web site where people can find their state information.

In addition to the call centers, the Obama administration will spend another $54 million to help states hire and train “navigators” that will also help people determine the right insurance to buy.

Sixteen other states are running their own health Exchanges, and some will have their own call centers to help people make decisions.

May 14, 2013 — Actress and activist Angelina Jolie’s recent decision to have a preventive double mastectomy highlights the difficult choices facing women who find out they have a high risk for breast cancer because of their genes.

Although relatively rare, mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes raise the risk of breast cancer by as much as 80%, experts say. The mutations also raise the risk of ovarian cancer.

Jolie describes in a New York Times op-ed piece why she decided to go through with the surgery. At 37, the mother of six wants to stay healthy and active for her family — and to reassure them that she is doing everything possible to avoid the disease that took her mother’s life: cancer.

“I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy,” Jolie writes. “But it is one that I am very happy I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”

WebMD asked breast surgeon Shelley Hwang, MD, chief of breast surgery and professor of surgery at Duke University Medical Center and Duke Cancer Institute, to fill us in on what else women need to know. Hwang did not treat Jolie.

Why do women undergo a preventive double mastectomy?

In Angelina Jolie’s case, she had a mutation that puts her at very high risk for getting breast cancer at some point in her life. Right now the most effective prevention that we have for [this] BRCA mutation carrier is a prophylactic double mastectomy.

It is always a double mastectomy because both breasts are at risk and you don’t know which breast is going to get breast cancer when women have a BRCA mutation.

How many women have the BRCA mutation?

Only about 5% of all breast cancers are in women who have this genetic mutation.

Is the breast cancer linked with this mutation more aggressive than others?

Yes, BRCA mutations are associated with a more aggressive breast cancer that is known as “triple negative.”

Do some experts think that performing a double mastectomy is too radical for those who test positive for BRCA mutations?

I think most breast cancer experts would agree that the choice is really the patient’s to make, and I really want to emphasize, it is a choice.

Preventive mastectomy is one very excellent choice. But another choice women can consider when they know they carry a BRCA mutation is early detection. And that comes with more active screening.

What would that involve?

If a woman knows she has a BRCA mutation and does not want to have a mastectomy, a good alternative is to have a mammogram and a breast MRI every year.

You can do both at once or choose to alternate. [For my patients] I choose to alternate, doing one test every 6 months.

It’s not as effective because by definition you are picking up cancer as it develops. But it is effective at picking up cancer at a very early stage.

If a woman has a preventive double mastectomy, what are the benefits and risks?

In women at higher risk — those with BRCA mutations — preventive surgery can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 90%. If the [increased] risk is 80% as it is for many BRCA carriers, this can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 90%.

In other words, this can reduce the risk to that lower than the general population. The risks [of the mastectomy] are not that great. Most women having preventive mastectomies are younger patients, and many choose to get reconstruction. A lot of the risk has to do with the implants, like implant complications, or other risks [linked with surgery] such as infections or bleeding.

Who should consider BRCA testing?

The women who should absolutely consider it are those who themselves have had a triple-negative breast cancer, the kind associated with BRCA mutations, at an early age, under 45, people who have had both ovarian and breast cancer in family members, and people who have breast cancer in the family and are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.

What is involved in testing for BRCA mutations?

It is a simple blood test, or they can swab the inside of your cheek. The best way to get this test is to go for counseling from a genetic counselor. Have them talk to you about the possibility of testing positive. Women really need to be counseled about what this means, what the results mean, what their risk is, and then to make the decision about whether to get the test.

If you only get tested for the three most common mutations, results take about 2 weeks. The more comprehensive test, where they do gene sequencing, can take a month.

What is the cost and who pays?

The cost is about $3,000. The cost of testing is covered by many insurance companies [if you are deemed high risk].
