LOS ANGELES (CBSLA/AP) — Los Angeles prosecutors say Oakland Raiders cornerback Sean Smith has been charged with beating his sister’s boyfriend last month.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday that Smith faces assault and battery charges.

They say the 30-year-old Smith, a Pasadena native, beat the victim and then stomped on the man’s head in Pasadena on July 4.

Police say when officers got to the corner of South Arroyo Parkway and Colorado Boulevard, they found the victim on the sidewalk, unresponsive with injuries to his face and head. After talking to witnesses, investigators identified Smith as the attacker. Police say he allegedly beat and then stomped on the victim’s head. Fans we spoke with in Pasadena had mixed reactions.

“I don’t think there’s any excuse for that kind of behavior, no matter it you’re a pro football player or a regular person or anything,” football fan Dallas Bray said.

“Any brother’s gonna take the side of a sister, overprotection. If he didn’t like how he was treating her or something, he knew something we didn’t know, then it might be understandable,” Alex Puga said.

Police aren’t saying what caused the attack but now Smith faces felony assault and battery charges. Smith signed a $40 million contract last season and some fans feel his actions reflect on the team.

The Rams play the Raiders this Saturday in their second preseason game in Oakland.

Smith previously played for the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith pleaded guilty in 2015 to a driving under the influence charge in Kansas City and was sentenced to two years of probation.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned in Pasadena in September. If convicted, Smith faces up to seven years in prison.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Smith had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
