Boy, 5, Killed In Florence Hit-And-Run

FLORENCE (CBSLA.com) – A 5-year-old boy died in a hit-and-run crash in Florence Tuesday night, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 82nd Street and Towne Avenue at around 5:15 p.m., according to a watch commander with Los Angeles police. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The boy ran into the street in front of his own house right before the vehicle struck him, police said. Surveillance video released by police showed the suspect vehicle fleeing right after impact. Police said the vehicle is a older model green Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban with tinted windows and front end damage. The driver is believed to be a 19 to 25 year old man who had a passenger about the same age.

"The kid ran across the street without looking, and that's when the Green Tahoe hit the kid," neighbor Felipe Carrillo told KCAL9.

The victim was identified to KCAL9 by a cousin as Ron, although authorities have not officially released his name.

"Just turn yourself in, that's all I can really say, just turn yourself in," Ron's cousin Calvin August said to the suspect. "You'll have to deal with God for that."

Police say the driver was likely going 40 miles per hour in a neighborhood with a speed limit of 25.
