Funeral Held For Marine Gunned Down While On Leave

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — A young Marine gunned down while on leave in South Los Angeles was mourned at a funeral Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Lance Cpl. Carlos Alfonso Segovia Lopez was eulogized Wednesday by his mother, fellow Marines, Mayor Eric Garcetti and others.

The 19-year-old Marine was on leave from Camp Pendleton when he was shot in the head while driving through South Los Angeles on Sept. 16. He was in the area visiting family and friends for the weekend.

He was taken off life support three days later after doctors told the family he could not be saved.

Segovia was a native of El Salvador and a U.S. citizen who joined the Marine Corps after high school, where he was in a group that helped others finish school and worked with a charity that helped the homeless.

The city has offered a $50,000 reward to find the killer.
