1,000 People From Different Backgrounds Stand Strong Against Violence At Rally In Irvine

IRVINE (CBSLA.com) —  They came, literally, from all walks of life Saturday with one purpose -- to stand against violence.

CBS2's Adrianna Weingold attended the rally featuring people from all ethnic groupds, religions, genders and sexual orientations.

They walked together as one and gathered to make a statement.

"This is about looking beyond the pain that we've experienced on both law enforcement's side and the communities side and finding a way to resolve our differences in the same room," said Rev. Dr. Charles Dorsey.

With law enforcement from across Orange County both protecting and walking with the community, the message was clear: We're stronger when we work together.

"We talk about community policing, that is a two way street. We cannot do it alone and our community cannot do it alone. We have to be partners to keep our communities safe," said O.C. Sheriff Sandra Hutchens.

The march was organized by Christ Our Redeemer (aka COR) Church in Irvine, with church groups from across the Southland joining city leaders in what was billed as a march for peace.

"We're talking about Black Lives Matter, Trans Lives Matter, Undocumented Immigrants Matter, when we come together and address how policies actually impact certain communities we're all going to be much better for it," said Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen.

Weingold also spoke to Saleem Sattar and his family. They are Muslim. Sarrar said he wanted his children to see how people can support one another, and work together with police to make the community a better, safer place for everyone.

"I'm trying to reinforce the idea that all lives matter and it's important that us as Muslims we are art of the community and part of the solution," said Sattar.

The day culminated with a summit -- pastors, law enforcement, the community -- listening and working together to try and stop violence between citizens and law enforcement. All sides said they hoped to set an example for the rest of the nation.
