California May Formalize Practice Of Lane-Splitting By Motorcyclists

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Drivers may not like it, but California may become the first state nationwide to establish guidelines for lane-splitting.

Lane-splitting allows motorcyclists to weave between vehicles in slower moving traffic, and is neither legal nor illegal.

Lawmakers in the state Assembly unanimously voted to allow the California Highway Patrol to establish safety guidelines.

The proposed law, according to the bill's author, would help reduce traffic congestion, and promote safety.

The bill still needs to be signed by Gov. Brown.
