Couple Married 64 Years Killed In House Fire In Sun Valley

LA TUNA CANYON (CBSLA.com) — Married for more than six decades, Ted and Aspasia Kiapos were being remembered by family members for their everlasting love.

The Kiapos, 90 and 91 years old respectively, died in a house fire in Sun Valley this weekend.

The pair met at a Greek gathering and eloped a month later. Their love story lasted 64 years through three kids and four grandchildren.

"They would just want to be remembered for how much they embraced life," said Athena Kiapos, a granddaughter.

Their family Monday, understandably devastated, recalled how both always said they couldn't live without the other, and hoped to one day die together.

"Her faith was so inspiring. Her devotion to her faith and her family and her husband, it couldn't have, it just couldn't have been better," said Sophia Kiapos, another granddaughter.

The fire started Saturday night.

Ted and Aspasia's daughter lived in the home with them and fell asleep with a lit cigarette. She tried to save her parents but was overcome by smoke.

Their son, John, says there was a smoke alarm in his parents' bedroom but they were too hard of hearing.

"We have lost a beloved, my parents and my daughters' grandparents," he said.

The couple's family is now trying to raise enough money for a proper funeral and memorial to honor the pair. For more information, click here.
