10-Month-Old Being Pushed In Stroller Fatally Struck By Pickup Truck

LOA ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —   Authorities said a 10-month-old was killed Thursday when the toddler and mother were struck by a pickup truck in South Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police said 36-year-old Juana Oxlaj was attempting to cross Broadway westbound at the north crosswalk at 59th Place with her child when the accident occurred about 7:10 a.m.

The pickup truck driver was making a left onto Broadway, according to police.

The victims were taken to California Hospital Medical Center, where the infant was later pronounced dead.

The mother suffered head trauma, but is expected to survive, according to the LAPD. She was listed in stable condition.

Police said the pickup driver, 38-year-old Esteban Carbajal of Los Angeles, stopped at the scene and neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected as factors in the accident.

The crash is under investigation by detectives of the LAPD's Central Traffic Division.
