Massive Sewage Spill That Prompted Beach Closures From Long Beach To Seal Beach Contained
LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — The massive sewage spill the prompted beach closures from Long Beach to Seal Beach has been contained, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works announced Tuesday.
But the water remained off-limits until Wednesday afternoon at the earliest.
The top of a sewer pipe collapsed about 2 p.m. Monday at Sixth Street and Mission Road. Debris from the collapse fell into the pipe, clogging the line and causing the overflow, which was contained Tuesday at 1:50 p.m., Public Works officials said.
About 2.4 million gallons of liquid waste had spilled, and 750,000 gallons had been captured.
Crews from L.A. Sanitation has put in place temporary sewer pumping with upstream diversion to another sewer system while contractors installed a permanent sewer bypass. "With that in place, repairs will get under way on the sewer line," constructed in the 1920s, the department said.
The cause of the ruptured pipe has not been determined.
