Candlelight Vigil Marks Somber 40th Anniversary Of Mass Killings At Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON (CBSLA.com) — Seth Fessenden. Paul F. Herzberg. Bruce A. Jacobson.

These were just three of seven names read Tuesday during a memorial to remember the victims of a mass shooting on the campus of Cal State Fullerton 40 years ago.

"We stand in solidarity with those families that still grieve for their loved ones," said Paul Miller, the university police chaplain.

On July 12, 1976, Edward Allaway, a janitor at the university, went into the library and began shooting until he ran out of bullets. In the end, seven people were dead. Two others were injured.

Patricia Almazan's father, Frank Teplansky, was among the victims. He was a graphic artist, who worked at the media center.

"Our dad served 20 years in the Marine Corps. He also served in and survived the Korean War only to be gunned down in cold blood," she said.

Paul Paulsen's older sister, Debbie Paulsen, was also killed. She was a 26-year-old graduate student in English literature.

"She had such promise," he said. "Debbie was a gentle, caring, and compassionate soul."

Those who spoke said this memorial comes at a time when so many others are now feeling the pain they feel and continue to bear.

"We must also acknowledge the very recent events in Dallas, Baton Rouge, Minnesota, Orlando, and so close to home, San Bernardino," Miller said.

"Mass murder is an extreme and horrific attack on unsuspecting and innocent beings," Almazan said. "It's an abomination that we have to get a handle on if we are to continue to be a free nation."
