Brian Shaw, Mark Madsen Returning To Lakers Coaching Staff

EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com) — A couple of familiar faces are returning to the Lakers bench next season.

Former guard Brian Shaw, who won three NBA titles with the Lakers and two more as an assistant coach, will return to the team as an associated head coach under Luke Walton, the team announced Friday.

Following his stints with the Lakers in 2000-02 as a player and 2009-10 as an assistant coach, Shaw served as head coach of the Denver Nuggets between 2013 and 2015, where he also coached center Timofey Mozgov, who has reportedly agreed to join the Lakers for a four-year, $64 million deal.

As an associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers for 2011-13, Shaw helped lead the Pacers to the postseason both years, including a run to the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals.

Credited with the development of young players at each of his coaching stops, the Oakland native is expected to bring "a wealth of coaching experience to the bench", the team said in a statement.

In addition to Shaw, Lakers fan favorite Mark Madsen will also stay on as an assistant coach, a role he's kept with the Lakers for the past two seasons.

Madsen spent the 2013-14 season behind the bench as a player development coach for the organization. The Danville, Calif., native won two NBA Championships with the Lakers in 2001 and 2002, and played a total of nine seasons with Los Angeles and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Assistant Coach Jesse Mermuys, who most recently served as head coach of the Toronto Raptors' NBA D-League affiliate, Raptors 905, was also named as an assistant coach.
