Moderate Quake Shakes Palm Springs; Multiple Aftershocks Reported

PALM SPRINGS (CBSLA.com/AP) — A moderate earthquake felt from San Diego to West Los Angeles hit the Palm Springs area early Friday.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 5.2 temblor struck at 1:04 a.m. PDT and was centered about 20 miles south of Rancho Mirage.

Seismologist and USGS Scientist Emerita Lucy Jones said the quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks.

According to Jones, the quake occurred along the San Jacinto fault, which is historically the most active fault in the Southland.

Some minor damage was reported inside homes in the Palm Springs and La Quinta area, mostly kitchen and glass items falling to the ground. There were no immediate reports of injuries across five Southland counties.

Facebook and other social media sites carried reports from people in San Diego and Los Angeles, about 100 miles to the west, reporting that they felt it.

A Lake Elsinore cashier said signs in the convenience store where she works were rattling and shaking.

Rancho Mirage is in Riverside County about 10 miles south of Palm Springs.
