Wild Weather Brings Strong Rain, Hail, Flooding To Parts Of SoCal

ONTARIO (CBSLA.com) — Wild weather moved through parts of Southern California on Friday, bringing rain, hail, and wind to parts of the region.

A flash flood warning was issued by the National Weather Service until 7:15 p.m. in Ontario, where street flooding left several vehicles, including Sue Paez's car, submerged in standing water.

"It was filling up with water inside too," said Paez, who had just bought her car a couple of months ago.

She says, when her car hit the water, it died. She tried not to panic.

"Just upset, scared, didn't know what to do," she said. "I thought it was more shallow than it was. I didn't think it was going to be that deep."

Not far from that scene, the downpour also caused the roof of Classic Containers, a warehouse, to collapse, where over an inch of rain had fallen within an hour.

The maintenance supervisor said employees heard the wood cracking just minutes before the roof came crashing down.

Inside, there were dozens of people, who were working.

All ran to safety.

"We start getting everybody out of here," said Ray Alarcon of Classic Containers. "A lot of water. Lots of water."

No injuries were reported as a result and a building inspector has been called to the scene to assess. At least one home in Ontario was also heavily damaged as a result of the rain.

A sister of the Ontario family set up a GoFundMe account to help them find a place to stay until their home is again livable.

Heavy rains also triggered a mudslide north of Lebec, prompting officials to close the northbound lanes of the Interstate 5 from State Route 138 to Fort Tejon until about 8:30 p.m. The closure spurred a massive back-up of traffic for miles.

Thousands were stranded, including the Kumar family, who sat in the thick of it for nearly three hours while heading to the Bay Area for their vacation.

Video posted to Twitter showed mud rolling down the hillside and onto the thoroughfare as college students, Cameron Law and Brandon Holcobe, tried to get to Yosemite for an important weekend.

"It's just Mother's Day, you know? Going to see my mom," Holcobe said.

Steady rain was also reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, Laguna Beach, Perris, Moreno Valley, and Wildomar.

Weather conditions began to calm by evening.
