Former Seamstress Recalls Working With Prince Just As He Launched Toward Mega-Stardom

DANA POINT (CBSLA.com) — Few people knew Prince better than the one-time seamstress for his band.

Cynthia Vargas Sieloff was just starting her career in Los Angeles as a seamstress for bands like Earth, Wind & Fire and Chaka Khan when she designed the first suit Prince ever wore.

But she made fashion history when he flew her to Minnesota and said he wanted her to make him a purple jacket.

Unable to find the right fabric, Sieloff recalls flying back to LA the next day to ship fabric there.

"And he says, 'I'm the only one that can be in purple and everybody else, Jesse and everybody else can be in whatever color you want,' " she said.

Sieloff says Prince also asked her to design a dog collar and shirts.

Now a Dana Point event planner, she says she had no idea back then he would become an icon always remembered in the trenchcoat she redesigned for him.
