Suspected Thief Caught On Camera Taking Ring From Deceased Woman, Police Say

ODESSA, Texas (CBSLA.com) — Footage has surfaced that appears to show a woman who's accused of stealing a ring right off the finger of a body at a funeral home.

Police in Odessa, Texas say they're looking for the suspected thief although the ring they say was taken was not the victim's real wedding ring and was valued at $10.

The woman's family already in mourning say they're crushed that someone would try to victimize their deceased mother. They're asking the woman to come forward.

"We were heartbroken enough," said Vel McKee, the victim's daughter. "Losing my mom. But then this, it killed us, made it worse."

The manager of the funeral home says the woman caught on camera asked to use the restroom.

The suspected thief only took about three minutes to steal the ring and then made her getaway, authorities said.

Police say theft of a corpse is still a felony despite the value of the ring.
