Chargers Launch Citizens' Initiative In Hopes Of New San Diego Stadium

SAN DIEGO (CBSLA.com) — The San Diego Chargers announced Wednesday that the organization has finalized a plan to bring a new stadium to downtown San Diego.

In a statement released by the Chargers' website, the team's Chairman Dena Spanos stated, "We believe this a great opportunity for the community to come together and create something special: and iconic, modern multi-purpose venue while also supporting and expanding our tourism and convention industries."

The plan could signal that Chargers officials may be giving up any potential timeshare of the future Rams stadium in Inglewood.

In order for the process to move forward, the team and supporters of the initiative must obtain 66,447 valid signatures from registered San Diego City voters by mid-June.

"We hope that the Citizens' Initiative will be before the voters on November 8, 2016, the date of the Presidential Election," said Fred Maas, Special Adviser to Spanos on the stadium initiative project. "Our goal would be to collect considerably in excess of the required number of signatures to ensure that we will have in excess of what we need to qualify for the ballot.

San Diego election law requires the publication of the initiative in a local newspaper.  Once that occurs - which is expected to happen sometime this week - then signature gathering will begin "on the 21st day after that publication," according to the team.

The Chargers also released a draft for the Citizens' Initiative, which you can read here.
