Bumble Bee Tuna Recalled Over Possible Contamination, Spoilage Concerns

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — If you are thinking about making a tuna fish sandwich for lunch today, make sure to check your pantry first.

On Thursday, Bumble Bee Foods issued a recall for 31,579 cases of Chunk Light tuna over possible product contamination. The affected cans were produced in February and were distributed nationally.

"The recall is being initiated out of an abundance of caution due to the possible under-processing of the affected products discovered by the co-packer during its routine quality audit," Bumble Bee wrote on its website. "The process deviations were part of the commercial sterilization process, and could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens."

Three products are included in the recall: 5 oz Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Water (UPC 8660000020), 5 oz Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Oil (UPC 8660000021), and 4 Pack of 5 oz Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Water (UPC 8660000736).

The affected products are marked with a can code that starts with a "T" (example: TOA2BSCAFB) and several "best by" dates. Click here to see the full list.

To date, there have been no reports of illness associated with the recalled cans.

No other production codes or products are affected by this recall.

Bumble Bee has advised consumers to throw away any recalled cans. Reimbursements can be obtained by providing the company with the label from the can or proof of purchase.

The company is working closely with the co-packer and the FDA to expedite the removal of products from commerce.

Further questions may be directed to the company's consumer affairs team at (888) 820-1947.
