LAUSD To Begin Serving Antibiotic-Free Chicken
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The school board for the nation's second-largest district unanimously approved a contract Tuesday for chicken products free of both antibiotics and hormones.
The move makes the LAUSD among the first of the nation's larger school districts to serve only antibiotic-free chicken, the district said in a news release.
"The passing of the resolution shows the bold steps this school district is taking to ensure the health and wellness of students," said the District's Food Services Co-Director Laura Benavidez.
Benavidez added, "providing the best possible, highest-quality food for students shouldn't be a privilege, it should be a right."
The district has made other changes relating to food, including no longer selling sodas and junk food at schools.
It was not immediately clear when the switch to drug-free chicken would be made.
