Parents Arrested After 8-Week-Old Baby Found With Skull Fracture

APPLE VALLEY (CBSLA.com)  —   Authorities have arrested the parents of an 8-month-old girl and charged them with child endangerment after the allegedly malnourished child was taken to the hospital with a skull fracture.

The suspects were identified as Joe Reyes, 26, and Kimberly Aquino, 22. Both are residents of Apple Valley.

Officials said Aquino took the couple's daughter to Desert Valley Hospital with head injuries on Monday.

Doctors determined the victim sustained a complex skull fracture as a result of blunt force trauma. The baby was transferred to Loma Linda Children's Hospital for further treatment. Doctors there also determined the baby was underweight for her age and severely malnourished.

The baby was placed into protective custody by social workers from Children and Family Services.

Detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department – Crimes Against Children Detail conducted an investigation.

During the investigation, detectives said they determined that the parents' account of how the baby received her injuries was not consistent with the injuries sustained.

Both parents were arrested Friday around 9:30 a.m.  Reyes and Aquino were booked into the High Desert Detention Center. They are both being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The suspects are scheduled for arraignment at the Victorville Superior Court next Wednesday.
