Caught On Video: Parolee Attacks Elderly Man With Bat At Santa Ana Gas Station

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A manhunt was underway Thursday for a parolee who brutally attacked a 72-year-old man with a bat at a gas station in Santa Ana.

The attack unfolded around 7:30 p.m. Sunday at 76 Gas Station located in the 4500 block of Westminster Street after Jose Chacon lost his footing and fell onto Samuel Alvarez's vehicle, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

Surveillance video captured Alvarez, 18, swinging an aluminum baseball bat across Chacon's face, shattering his jaw and subsequently breaking several teeth.

Authorities said Chacon grabbed a pipe from his truck, but was unable to fend off the attack in self-defense. The last blow knocked him to the ground.

According to hospital officials, Chacon is recovering at UCI Medical Center in Orange. He will undergo surgery later today.

"They won't know the extent of his injuries until they get in there," said Vanessa Chacon, daughter of the victim.

Police said Alvarez is known to frequent the 3900 block of West Fifth Street.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Alvarez has been urged to contact Detective Capacete at (714) 245-8506.
