1 Killed In Santa Ana Crash; 2 Others Seen Running Away With Major Injuries

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — One driver was killed, while another driver and the passenger of another car ran away, in a two-car crash early Monday morning at a Santa Ana intersection, authorities said.

Police Corporal Anthony Bertagna says a Mercedes t-boned a Ford Mustang at First and Bristol streets at about 2 a.m. The driver of the Mustang, a man and the sole occupant of that car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses saw the driver of the other car, a Mercedes, and a passenger running away from the scene, one with an open leg fracture and the other with what appeared to major injuries.

Police are following a blood trail in hopes of finding the people who fled, Santa Ana police Cmdr. Jeffrey Smith said. Area hospitals are being contacted for the two people who ran away.

Two men in the Mercedes -- the vehicle believed to have been at fault -- were hospitalized, one with a fractured leg and the other with hip pain.

The intersection was expected to be closed for several hours for the investigation.

Bertagna says detectives are looking into whether the Mercedes was speeding and ran a red light prior to the collision.
