Video Captures Touching Moment As Doctor, Surgery Patient Share Music Jam
GLENDALE (CBSLA.com) — When faced with surgery, most would like to think they're in-tune with their doctor.
Well, a little over a month ago, professional musician Sergio Vigilato was waiting for surgery at Glendale Memorial Hospital.
He was understandably nervous until his urologist, William Sloan, reassured him using an analogy that struck a chord.
"Sergio," he said, "Don't worry, your body is like a fine instrument. I'll tune it."
But before going under the knife, Sloan had a request:
"I told him, I said look, 'If you don't bring your guitar to surgery, the surgery is going to be canceled,' " Sloan said.
And so, just minutes before surgery, Sloan and Vigilato made music together.
Sloan said he'd never done that before.
"Never, I never had a patient that could play in the operating room," he said.
Brian Gold, the director of surgery, shot cellphone video of the men playing in-tune only weeks before the surgery.
"It happened literally in the gurney, in the pre-op area, and even he went on that same gurney into the OR," Gold said.
While they played, both men were equals and Vigilato no longer has a fear of hospitals.
"Believe me, it's a happy place," he said.
Vigilato hopes to return to the hospital soon, but not for another surgery: he hopes to play music for other patients.
