LAFD: Workers Grinding Metal Spark Brush Fire In Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — Construction workers grinding metal sparked a brush fire Monday in Sylmar, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire was reported near the 11200 block of North Wheatland Avenue shortly 3 p.m.

Fifteen to 20 acres were scorched as flames raced up a hillside. Crews battled the flames on the ground and from the air, using a Super Scooper to make water drops.

Nearly 150 firefighters responded and had the fire knocked down in an hour and 14 minutes, according to LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

Crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Angeles National Forest assisted.
